Is there anyone in here using MFP and doing keto?
Looking for a but if advice on how to get started in keto and wondering if I need to watch my calorie intake as closely as I would if eating a more balanced diet?

Yes. Calories always matter most, no matter what the composition of your diet is, or what time you eat your calories. The only way to lose weight is by consuming less calories than you expend.
As far as keto, it’s a quite popular diet on MFP, with a ton of topics about it and more started every day. Browse through the forums or perhaps do a search for ‘keto’, you’ll find plenty of reading.4 -
Calories are still king for weight control but you may not need to watch them as closely if you experience diminished appetite.
Some people, mainly those with IR, seem to lose a bit easier on Keto at the same calorie level. It is not often a big difference but it can happen. It happened for me. I lost 2-3 lbs a week most weeks in the first three months while eating 1500 kcal a day. My goal was 1420 kcal for a loss of 1.5 lbs per week but I ate a bit more and lost a bit more. For some reason when I lower carbs, my TDEE seems to be around 2500 but I will start gaining at that if I eat high carb (especially refined carbs). It was a bit weird but I didn't complain.
I was counting the calories I ate back then so I could learn portion sizes and macro content better, but I did not force myself to stay below my caloric goal. I did not need to due to reduced hunger.
When I started Keto, I cut refined and processed foods first, then sugary fruits and starchy root vegetables. I ate meat, seafood, eggs, nuts, seeds, full fat dairy, coconut, olives, avocado, vegetables and some berries.
I also increased sodium a bit to get rid of the Keto flu. You may need about 2 tsp of salt a day.
Good luck.5
