MFP set a goal on how much carbs, fat, sugar, and sodium etc. Is ok to go over the goal set or is defeating the purpose if your trying to lose weight?

Calories are king for weight loss.

The macro balance (between carbs, fat, and protein) is for nutrition and satiation. As long as you get at least enough fat and at least enough protein, you can use whatever macro balance works best for you.

As seska422 said, calories are king for weight loss.

I consider protein and fat goals as minimums, and let carbs fall where they fall. I pay zero attention to sugars, and not much to sodium.

So basically don't go over your calories. If I go over my fat, protein and carbs I will still lose weight.

    Correct.

With the proviso that if you go over your fats, proteins AND carbs, you’ll have gone over your calories also. Your macros make up your calories - 4 calories per gram for protein and carbs, 9 calories per gram for fats. They won’t add up exactly due to database inconsistencies and rounding errors in food labels, but generally if you go over in all of them, you’ll have gone over your calories also.

If you go over all of them then you will be reducing your calorie deficit as you'll be over your goal.

If you're over 1 and under another and your calories at at goal, you're fine.

MFP sets protein quite low so you may want to aim for that as a minimum.
