What’s everyone’s thoughts on sugar. I’m bulking now, and on around 380 carbs a day, made up of porridge oats, rice, bread, fruit etc, but sometimes struggle to stay under the sugar goal on MFP which is 84g a day?
Does sugar really have a negative outcome when bulking????

A "negative outcome" in what sense?
There's nothing whatsoever wrong with sugar unless you have a medical reason/need to avoid it. With the proviso that it's being fit within the context of an overall reasonably balanced/nutritious diet.3 -
Sugar is fine. I think a ton of added sugar and high fructose corn syrup is not good but some sugar from real food like fruit or an occasional treat is perfectly fine.11

Provided you are getting adequate protein, fat, fibre and nutrition, feel good and it doesn't negatively affect your workouts, then it's fine when bulking. I have candy right before my lifting sessions and when I'm bulking I get up there in sugar, added or otherwise. I am able to hit my macro and nutrition goals, I feel fantastic and my workout performance is great, and I have had three very successful bulk cycles this way.4

Conversion of carbs in the body:
Oats> glucose/ glycogen
Sweet potato > glucose/ glycogen
Fructose > glucose/ glycogen
Sucrose > glucose/ glycogen
Basically anything with “ose” >glucose/ glycogen
SUGAR> glucose/ glycogen
I think you get my point lol. Unless you’re diabetic or PREFER staying away from sugar, you’re fine. Now I’m not justifying filling your macros with pure added sugar or high fructose corn syrup cause most of the time those products lack fiber and essential micros, but you get what I’m saying...
After minimums are met, there’s nothing wrong with it, there’s also nothing wrong if it accounts into your macro minimums! Also, if you’re bulking and it helps people to hit their calories a little easier.....well bring on the cookies and doughnuts lol.....not from personal experience or anything....😏😂💪🏻10 -
I went over the MFP default sugar goal every single day while losing weight, with way less than a teaspoon of added sugar daily. (It was from whole fruits and no-sugar-added dairy, mostly.)
I don't think you have to worry at all when bulking, as long as you don't eat so much sugar it that you can't also get ample protein, adequate healthy fats, and plenty of nice, varied, colorful fruits and veggies, for all-round good nutrition.4 -
IMO, sugar is only a concern if you have a medical condition that requires you to limit it or if foods with sugar are crowding out the other foods you need to meet your nutritional needs.6
