The US Department of Health and Human Services has updated its exercise guidelines for Americans. Both the current and previous guidelines call for 150 to 300 minutes of moderate exercise for week, however the change is in how long exercise has to occur to be considered effective. Previous guidelines stated that exercise needed to last at least 10 continuous minutes to be effective, but new guidelines state that any amount of time of exercise is beneficial and counts towards the guideline. This is based off of new research that shows the benefits of even micro-exercise.
So when you hear about needing to do exercise, don't let that overwhelm you. It can be as simple as getting up from your desk, taking a quick walk, doing a little dance, or something else to get your body moving for a minute or two. You can accomplish a lot by just doing a little!
