Is Coke Zero too good to be true?

It claims to have 0 calories and looks like a great substitute for sugary snacks. Are there any non-widely known negatives of it?

In what dosage? Are you planning on drinking gallons of it a day, or just enjoying it in moderation within the context of a reasonable diet?5 -

It's sad when the people we respect fall to the dark side.
Coke Zero ftw!10 -

It looks like it has aspartame in it. There is some controversy about the side effects caused by this ingredient. It causes me to get really bad headaches....plus I can't stand the horrible aftertaste. I just stick with water....or vitamin water sweetened with something that is not aspartame.24 -

Does it have aspartame?

Most blind taste tests show that most of us can't really tell which is "our brand". Preferences are fairly consistent in tests; we will keep picking the same one most often. One of the great true stories in marketing is that in blind tests more people prefer Pepsi but Coke beats it in sales. A more recent variant is the professed preference for cane sugar in Coke; HFCS crushes it in blind taste tests.6

Yes, Coke Zero has aspartame. I don't think it tastes like regular Coke, and the artificial sweetener taste is very strong. If you like the taste, though, I don't see why it would be an issue in moderation for most people.3 -
Pepsi Max is the best but Coke Zero is good too! As they say though- everything in moderation. I find they can be great when I have a little craving for something sweet!4

It's one of the few things that works for me when I'm very thirsty. Tastes good and a lot of carbonation.
Nothing wrong with it, nothing wrong with aspartame, and is a good alternative to more calorie dense options.3 -

Just maybe one 500ml bottle every other day

There really isn't any controversy, just twisted information.15 -

It's fine. Really. Switching to zero or close-to-zero calorie drinks have helped tons of folks manage their calories better while improving their health.
Enjoy!4 -

Well, did you know that in the US the vast majority of people who drink aspartame sweetened drinks are overweight? Also the majority of people who breathe...8 -

And 100% of the people who drink water eventually die. Every. Single. One.15 -
I like it better than regular coke. Sugary drinks give me a weird mouth-feel, so I like diet drinks because they don't feel that way.5
-
I prefer a sugary drink but don't dislike artificial. The preference isn't enough to make the trade off, I could make room in my calorie budget for a regular drink or two, but why should I when instead I could have the diet drink with a chunk of cheese or whatever?4

For people who enjoy the taste and don't get headaches from it, there's no good evidence it should be avoided. Presumably OP likes the taste and hasn't noticed any headaches and that is why he is interested in drinking it.
Avoiding something just because there is "controversy," in the absence of good evidence, will result in cutting thousands of enjoyable, productive, and non-harmful experiences from life.8 -
I drink diet coke and other artificially sweetened beverages and have had no problem losing and maintaining my loss. If it has other health risks I guess we'll have to wait and see what gets me first, lol. I'm 62 so the wait might not be more than 20 or 30 years...............6

If it makes OP feel better, Coke Zero is the "manly" version of Diet Coke.4

Well, he asked about the negatives. One of the negatives is that aspartame has been associated with multiple health concerns. I have experienced one of those health issues. Didn't realize aspartame was such a hot button topic around here. I'm still new here so I will avoid this topic in the future.

It's been extensively discussed in the past, and addressed by a person with professional education/knowledge in the field: https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/1308408/why-aspartame-isnt-scary/p19 -
I LOVE Coke Zero and have had 2-3 cans a day for YEARS with no ill-effect. It has always helped and never hindered my weight loss. I even drank it through two pregnancies (with my doctor's permission) and my kids are now 7 and 10 and on the honor roll5

For the person who woo'ed me (not peer-reviewed studies):

"Consider the world of diet beverages.
For years, Coca-Cola tried and failed to entice men to consume Diet Coke, its popular (among women) zero-calorie cola, packaged in a striking white can. But then the company introduced the zero-calorie cola Coke Zero, packaged in a black can, along with a male-centric marketing strategy, which has become increasingly blatant about gender since the soda hit the market in 2005. Last March, Coke Zero launched the "It's Not Your Fault" marketing campaign. "We're talking to men more overtly with 'It's Not Your Fault,' " said Pio Schunker, head of integrated marketing communications at the company's North America Group, at the time of the launch. "We're positioning Coke Zero as a defender and celebrator of guy enjoyment."8 -
The only negative I can see is that because it is very sweet....it could cause some people to crave more sweet things which makes it difficult to stay within your calorie goal. However if you don't have any adverse reactions to the sweetener (headaches, cravings) then go for it. I don't drink it regularly but if I am out for a meal and not having alcohol I'd usually have a diet fizzy drink.2

Interesting about the coke marketing strategies.
In my subjective opinion, Pepsi max and coke zero both taste better than diet coke which to me has a bit of a chemically taste.
i dont like the taste of diet sodas other than the cola ones as I think they all taste way too chemically. I guess the cola flavour is strong enough to overcome this whereas lemonade, orange etc isnt.
But from an 'are they ok' question - yes, fine.
just up to you if you like the taste of them or not.3 -
Nothing wrong with Coke Zero, especially if a bit of sweet taste helps nip cravings in the bud or if you'll drink that instead of full-cal beverages.1
-
I love diet soda, but colas aren't my thing. I only drink them when out and there's nothing else available. At home, we're diet ginger ale fiends. I especially like the diet cranberry ginger ale.
It's often just the thing when you feel like you want a little something something but you're not sure what.3
