Comparing apples to oranges, why do people do it?

I hear a lot from people, towards me and also towards others.

“I can’t lift heavy weight like that, but at least I have abs”

“I may not look aesthetic but at least I can lift more weight than he can”

“I may not be strong or aesthetic but at least I can kick his *kitten*”

When they try to compare themselves to others. They aren’t even on the same journey as them. Of course the shredded guy may not be at his lifting potential, or the guy who can lift the earth isn’t exactly defined. So when these people do their comparison to others who aren’t going towards the same goal, why does is make them feel better?

Honest questions, just really interested in the psychology of it and why they consider is valid in their eyes.

Am seeing: A bodybuilder vs a strength athlete like a strongman candidate vs a combat athlete

I'm thinking that if anyone from any of the 3 is motivated to denigrate another person whose purpose and training and body-ready goals aren't the same as the source of comparisons, he or she is determined to, to self-inflate.

Many people feel inferior deep inside. They think other people know their weaknesses so this is just a way to prop up their ego.
