I work in a very high physical activity job, by the time I go to the gym, I am left to do a half-assed workout. Would eating more and pre-workout help?

What do you consider a "very high physical activity job"?
Yes, eating in a slight surplus could possibly help with energy levels - a lot of this depends on your macros. Personally, I find when I go too low carb my workouts suffer. A pre-workout might help. For me, a cup of very strong lukewarm instant coffee about 30 minutes prior to the gym works just as good as much more expensive products. When I tried some of the stronger producst like C4 I found it disrupted my sleep. I hit the gym from about 5-7pm and go to bed at around 10... and was still too wired to sleep from that stuff.
Just as important to all this stuff is your actual program - keep in mind, that building muscle is a slow process no matter how perfectly you do everything. Attempting it with a less than optimal program or at dietary maintenance or a deficit just makes it that much slower.1 -
I would utilize auto regulation within your programming so it doesn't feel half-assed.
What are your stats? That will determine if you need more food, less, or stay put.
Are you sensitive to caffeine? If so, coffee or forms other morecexpensive forms of caffeine such as pre workout might help on some days.
Is training before work an option?1 -

Workout before work?2 -
Eat more food to make up for the energy expenditure. And regarding pre workout meal and supplementation...that’s all up to you via trial and error.2

Do you try and have a good espresso shot prior to your weight routine? You tired doesn't help.. Maybe get the weights session in before whatever it is that tires you out?0

Eat at a surplus and yea pre workout. Coffee if it’s your thing0

Just going with the obvious; try training before work if your schedule allows so. Like yourself, I'm usually too drained to go after work; hence, I devote some time before work.0
