Is there some secret trick to choosing grapefruits?

I really like grapefruits for snacks but the last couple bags I have brought home look all pretty and evenly red/orange on the outside but are dry and hard on the inside =[. And it's the whole bag! What am I missing?

I pick the bag or loose fruits that are round and evenly colored. I tried to go to the local farmer's market but they didn't have any.

Dry grapefruits are gross =[

I try to pick one that seems heavy for its size which hopefully means its juicy inside.

Ooh that makes sense. I'll have to compare them more next time.
  • Like pink grapefruit. Smooth firm skin and heavy. Good luck next time.

Ever see those older ladies at the grocery store that practically grope the produce... they're not leaving with disappointing produce in their bags. When you "feel up" a grapefruit, it should have skin that doesn't feel tight, dry, thin, or tough. It shouldn't feel in any way detached from the rest of the grapefruit or bruised. This in some ways is more reliable than going by color and can be applied to buying citrus things in general.
