Map My Ride and Walk

I walked a particular route then rode the exact same route. Map My Walk gave me 61 minutes walked, 3.05 miles with 374 calories burned. Map My Ride gave me 19 minutes, 1.42 miles burning 144 calories.

Am I missing something? If no one knows why this happens I will contact the Map people. Thanks.

Huh, that's weird. Any change you could have lost GPS? I can get weird results in the woods, which I assume is due to not having a consistent connection. I bring my reliable "dumb" Omron pedometer with me too.

Also, I use MapMy* for fun but not the calories - they are a lot higher than the MFP database, which people already consider inflated.

Quite possibly! I guess I can recheck it doing that route again.

What do the GPS maps look like for the two activities? The time and calorie differences are useless to compare since you’re doing two different activities-but the same route should be the same(ish) distance. So the GPS map on at least one is probably very different than the route you took. My last runkeeper run had me crossing the highway twice (and since I don’t even run near the highway, it overestimated my distance considerably).

Map My Ride sent me a response that their new app does not work accurately when a cell phone is in power saver mode. That was the issue. I am not sure who would compare time and calorie differences between the Run and Walk app, that would make no sense. The only thing that is relevant is the distance.

Just what I was going to say. I had my phone on power saver mode and lost GPS which meant about 2 kms of my walk was not logged. It is working fine now that power saver mode is off.

Try Strava instead perhaps? I've recorded for over 8hrs without a problem.

By the way - that walking calorie estimate looks wildly exaggerated unless you weigh over 400lbs.

Sijomial, why say you that? Any app or calculation is an estimate. For Example, going to https://caloriesburnedhq.com/calories-burned-walking/ , and plugging my weight of 205 into the simple calorie burn indicator along with 61 minutes walked, a normal walking pace gives me 351 calories burned, fast pace gives me 431 calories burned. At 205 pounds what do YOU think my calories burned to be, 4 or 5 ?????

185 if you go with the following calculation:

body weight in lbs x 0.3 x distance in miles

Travistock, where did you get this formula from?

Bodyweight multiplied by efficiency ratio of 0.3 multiplied by miles walked is a very common formula used for normal speed walking and gives you net calories not gross calories and certainly not the fantasy double calories that the MapMy app is giving you. Yes it's an estimate but yours is a dreadfully exaggerated one.

If you were running the same distance (running is roughly twice as inefficient a movement compared to walking) then it would be reasonable.

Pace doesn't make much of a difference until you are getting into the realms of race walking.

ETA - for long duration but slow rate of calorie burn exercise you really do want to be using net calories. Suspect half the exaggeration is because MapMy giving you a gross calorie estimate.
