My fiance claims that he gets indigestion every time we eat whole wheat pasta. He wants switch back to white pasta. Do you guys think that something about wheat pasta could really be giving him indigestion, or do you think he's just being difficult (like me LOL)?

It that is the case it would probably happen with white pasta as well as it is wheat, just not whole wheat.0 -
I used to get chronic heartburn and found switching from white to whole wheat pasta actually HELPED. It's more likely tomato sauce, if you use it (very acidic.) I found I stopped getting (most) of my hearburn after losing the weight, but red sauce still triggers it, so we tend to just have butter or oil on our pasta.0

It's not that big of a difference in calories or fat.
I wouldn't put of a fight over pasta.
Give the guy some regular good pasta!0 -
I prefer whole-wheat pasta, but the rest of my family prefers white. I just fix two kinds. Problem solved!0

well, I have to admit your topic was more interesting than the outcome, sounded like he was cheating on you with food lol
but....to each his own, the calorie difference isn't huge and he gets less fiber....ah well, can't work for everyone0 -
I mix the pasta half and half for my kids. I would like all whole wheat pasta, but they love white. And yes, a wheat allergy means no wheat of any kind, white or whole.0

My husband had IBS and is pre-diabetic. Since he has been diagnosed with these he finds that pasta makes him very sick. We have had to completely eliminate it from our diet. I've tried every type, different sauces, etc, and nothing worked. I do miss it but find that a portion is so small it just leaves me wanting more anyway . . . so I've just gotten used to life without pasta.0

I also have heard of people getting indigestion with wheat etc....i mean its always possible to have a food allergy or some type of food that doesnt settle with your stomach....i honestly do not stray away from white rice, regular pasta etc, but i have learned to proportion it so that i dont intake a high amt of calories....0

I do miss it but find that a portion is so small it just leaves me wanting more anyway . . . so I've just gotten used to life without pasta.

Agreed. And theres not much of a difference in flavor or texture, IMO. He might not even notice if you snuck it into the meal.
Besides if he has a wheat allergy then many other things would bother him as well. Even white pasta, as it is still made from wheat, only more refined. Maybe the bost in fiber was too sudden for him?0 -
We use Ronzoni Smart Taste pasta. I haven't checked ALL of the nutrition information lately but I know the fiber is equivalent to whole wheat. I'm the only one in my family who will eat whole wheat, so this is our compromise! They don't even know it is better for them!0

You could also try Barilla Plus. It's a bit more expensive but it has whole grains and more protein and tastes just like regular pasta.0

He could be, but maybe he just doesn't like whole wheat pasta? White pasta isn't junk food. It's fine. I like it better. I like white bread instead of wheat bread and white rice instead of brown. It's just a matter of personal taste.
Has anyone noticed that brown rice has more calories and fat than white? How come? Very confusing considering that people say brown rice is healthier.0 -
Haha, the title of this topic made me giggle.
He may not be fibbing. A few weekends ago we had some friends over for dinner, and I made this super healthy homemade lasagna using whole wheat pasta, which both my husband and I are used to. But, my friends had some serious bathroom issues afterwards :laugh: (ok i shouldn't laugh, haha) Not at our house, thank goodness. But, she asked me later what we used for ingredients. She had recently took a "food science" class at college as part of her culinary arts class, and she had learned that sometimes when people aren't accustomed to whole wheat foods, their stomachs goes crazy at first. Almost like if I were to eat a huge bowl of bran. I get some seriously instant bathroom issues when I eat it. :blushing: Now, I don't know if there's a whole lotta truth to that, since I'm not an expert on food science, and I don't know her sources, but I thought I would share the experience. But, like others have said, he could be allergic too? I use Healthy Harvest pasta, and my husband can't tell the difference. My mom (who is SO anti healthy food, it makes me mad) also didn't recognize the difference when she came over for dinner.0 -
My fiance is THE SAME WAY! He claims indigestion and digestion issues with whole wheat pasta/ brown rice.... which really cramps my style with dinners... And I'm nto about to switch to that white/ processed/ artificial stuff either!0

I would disagree. Whole Wheat & Whole Grains are much healthier than processed, enriched, white flour based products. If you do some simple research you'll find many benefits of whole wheat and whole grain-- check out Mayo Clinic. I'd personally rather eat foods that naturally have nutrients in them, not enriched products. Rather than looking at the calorie value alone, take a look at the ingredients listed.0 -

where do you find the quinoa? I have looked everywhere and I just can't seem to find it. I don't have any super health food stores here, just your basic grocery store and the farmer's market. but, anytime I ask someone at the store, they are confused.0 -
He could try a couple things out to see if it's the wheat or just the fiber. Did things start when he switched to whole wheat pasta? Did he eat whole wheat products before, like whole grain bread? If it's the fiber intake, after a few days his body should get used to it. Some people are freaked out by changes in the bathroom. If he's always had problems after having wheat products, he could try a short wheat elimination to see if his symptoms are better.
Or maybe he just doesn't like it. I had taken me a little while to get used to.
However, I found out I have a wheat allergy...and I LOVE the quinoa pasta. It still has the protein in it like the whole wheat stuff and some fiber. I find it in the regular pasta aisle in some stores and in others I find it in the organic section. Kicklikeagirl, I think the plain quinoa (not the pasta) is where the rice is...look in the organic/natural area of your store, again some places have it mixed in with normal stuff too. Both the pasta and the grain I've seen in a turqoise box.0 -

Indigestion is a good chance, but perhaps he just wants the white pasta but either doesn't want to hurt your feelings or has told you before that he prefers the white pasta but you have ended up arguing and he is trying to avoid that.
What is he like with stuff like bread, does he prefer white or is he not bothered what sort of bread he eats?0 -
how often do you do you eat pasta? is it really something that you can't give on? call it an act of love, but let him keep the pasta he likes.
when my husband and i were first married, i drove me CRAZY that he wanted a different toothpaste than the one i wanted to buy (his left a blue ring in the sink), but over time (and several arguments) i realized that making him happy was more important than my having to clean a blue sink ring. now i buy his toothpaste and my tootpaste and we use different products. sometimes it is okay to let them have something that is comforting to them even if you know it is not the *best* product for them.

Try Soba noodles. They are made from buckwheat, which isn't actually a wheat or a real grain, and are very healthy for you. They are Japanese and you can get them at most asian markets.0
