Keto - Why would anyone do this?

"Sodas, bread, rice, pasta, fruit, corn, potatoes, beans, baked goods, sweets, juice, and alcohol all get the axe. Basically, you have to avoid most sugars and starches. Whole grains like oatmeal don't even make the cut!"

Why??? Why not just portion control so you can enjoy those wonderful things that Keto cuts out?

It makes no sense.

It works for diabetics, for people with seizure disorders especially in the pediatric population, some people with chronic pain related to inflammatory conditions say it keeps them off Embrel and NSAIDS, some people with Chrohns/colitis report good success with it and it works really well for people with cystic acne. Some people with chronic low mood says it works wonders but some say it causes chronic low mood. Not everyone can eat all foods in moderation either so portion control is relative. Most people don't get fat overeating salad and fresh fresh fruit and steamed fish. Any food is allowed on keto as long as the carb count stays at 50 grams or below. One criticism is that the carb restriction is getting more extreme on keto and people seem to keep trying to redefine keto. Some say keto is keeping carbs below 30 or even 20 grams which I think is discouraging and unnecessary.

I have a good friend for whom keto has been incredibly successful for weight loss, when all other diets have failed. Maybe the restrictiveness of the plan helps to keep her on track, maybe it just works with her physiology, I dunno.

I would be concerned about adequate vitamin intake when eliminating large groups of foods like that.

I love keto. I enjoy my food more now than I did before. I still enjoy breads, sweets, some fruit, wine ect. I haven’t gotten the donuts thing figured out yet though :(

This. I’ve been slacking a lot the last few months, but when I truly stick to keto, my skin is clearer, my migraines are almost non-existent (and before keto, they occurred 20+ days/month even on a daily preventative, which I no longer have to take), and my energy level is way higher. The 35 pounds I’ve lost on it is a very nice bonus, too.

Because it gives you super powers. Haven't you ever wanted to time travel? Carbs are the only thing preventing it.

It's a pretty radical diet. Maybe it works for some people in certain circumstances. It's subjective AF. I tried it once and felt horrible...I became a friggin space cadet..even more so. Just was curious. Brain needs glucose so I don't understand why you would want to deprive it. Our anatomy and physiology is so well adapted to eating plants and carbs.
