Moved to the Netherlands 6 weeks ago and was quite shocked about the price of fresh food, especially fish, fruit and veggies. The fruit problem was solved at work as we get a huge crate of fruit every week. The rest though...

Today I finally went to a big outdoor market, close to closing time. It's huge, all in all more than 2km long. Don't know about fish prices but veggies are so cheap! I bought a big pile of veggies (probably a lot more than I can eat) for 3 Euro. In a supermarket I'd have paid 3x this. Plus this market is very popular with the Caribbean, Arab and Asian community here, and the choice of veggies is just marvellous! <3

Now I'm slowly starting to think not everything's better in Scotland (apart from Brexit of course). Ok, the landscape here is still *kitten*, but at least I can cook proper food <3

Netherlands leads the world in agricultural efficiency. It's really quite amazing.

Hmm.. considering that the soil is not suitable for most types of produce and the climate not suitable either then I would avoid pretty much all produce as it's likely from hightech indoor farms and lacks taste. ;)

So glad you have found somewhere to shop. The sound of that market has me wanting to visit it.

I find the fruit, veg, and any protein but lamb, expensive in Scotland compared to the west coast of Canada, (and we are more expensive than most of North America because of transportation to the island) so I don’t know if I could cope with the sticker shock of Holland.

    Definately not going Dutch.

    Cheers, h.

I used to go to Aldi and Lidl for fruit and veggies, and for lesser meat. Good things came from a local farmers market or small Asian shops. I found I could eat well (and have many snacks) on £100/month.

Those markets remind me of the markets on Curaçao, which is heavily influenced by the Dutch, being a previous colony. I would love shopping there, though figuring our the fish would be a challenge initially.

Nice haul. At first glance, on my phone, I thought the balls on the background were exotic fruit.

In Scotland I’m stuck with Tesco and sainsbury’s- poor selection, or local shops/market- good selection, but expensive.

Really enjoying your relocation tales. :)

    Cheers, h.

Thanks a lot  Lets just hope I'm not relocating anytime soon again. It's getting tiresome :D
