How much does the average personal trainer make?

So, here we go:
I'm thinking about getting into good shape and becoming a certified personal trainer. Does anyone know of a personal trainer that has told them what it's like? For example, how much do they make? Is the job like?
If anyone knows anything about the career or pathway of becoming a personal trainer, please feel free to share your ideas.
Thanks.

Theres many variable.
1) how in demand are you. With more business than you can handle, you can afford to increase your rate and still have more than enough business.
2) area. I was in Flint, MI and for $20/hour I could get a very good trainer. I could easily find a $10/hour too but I liked this trainer. But if you go to other places you can easily expect to pay $100/hour. All vary by location really
3) your experience and training.
4) What your settings are. My trainer used to work at a Gym part time and while she never actively marketted herself to public, she would get a lot of business simply by folks walking up to her and asking about training to which she's just say "heres my card, hit me up". They liked it because she's part of the gym so theres a sense of security and typically people join a gym nearby so they knew that they won't have to goto any other place for private lessons.0 -
I wouldn't even try it if you live in Antarctica.0

If you go corporate (LA Fitness, 24 Hour) you won't be making that much money, at least until you're able to build your clientele. 24 Hour paid $14/hour, while LA Fitness paid per half hour (You should check out Glassdoor.com to see how much pts make at these and other corporate locations). However, it is a great start to gain experience. Most successful trainers that I've met make more money starting their own business. They started out at a gym, build up their clientele/experience, and take those clients with them to their new business.
Bottom line: Experience, clientele (including their results) and marketing dictate how successful you can become.0 -
