Surprisingly low cals? What foods surprised you?

Share your low cal surprises. As I’m making substitutes I’m looking for swaps. I love pickles and while low, I noticed dill are near zero while sweet are 15-25 cals per serving. Also commercial salsa is 10-25cal per 2 tablespoon while homemade picodegayo is less.

    Chickpeas! I use them to make blondies, edible cookie dough, hummus, falafel, snack mixes and more. They’re super versatile! Also, poultry based products in place of beef. Turkey breakfast sausage links and patties are around 80 cal for 2, turkey bacon is around 20-30 cal a slice and turkey burgers are less than 200. I also buy chicken Italian and andouille sausages that are 80 cal a link.

    I bought some turkey bacon, have not tried it yet. Maybe do potatoes with turkey bacon and chives with jalapeños

    Potatoes shocked me the most when I actually got educated on what a serving size was and realized how much you get for like 150 calories.

    Spinach. I knew it was low calorie, but you can pretty much eat the whole container (I obviously wouldn’t lol) for around 60 calories - give or take.

    Also lean ground beef. I used to only stick to lean chicken or turkey when I realized ground beef was also a good low calorie option.

    Egg whites. Really good protein source for such low calories.

    Greek yogurt and cottage cheese as well

    Bacon was lower than I expected.

    Shrimp.

    Plain potatoes. Even more so, most other root vegetables and winter squash.

    Pork chops and pork loin.

    Baba ganoush, unfortunately, is not surprisingly low calorie, because I love it. I expect you could make a tasty eggplant-based dip that is, will play around with that when eggplants are back in season, as I always have more than I know what to do with.

    No it's a Trader Joe's product, tastes like hummus, slightly smoother texture, 30 cals the 2 tbsp instead of 70 for the actual garbanzo made hummus.

    I do a low cal version. Using just chickpeas, roasted red peppers and spices... not bad.. egg plant, would be an interesting change.
