I'm not sure if this is healthy

So I was browsing Reddit the other day and someone replied that to help fight hunger (or simply eat when bored), you could try and chug a glass of water (250ml or so), eat a teaspoon of food you wanted to eat (non-fat cottage cheese here), and chug another glass of water (250ml). He said that your body would feel full of whatever you just ate, but it's only water.

I've tried it, and surprisingly, I feel full for 3 hours or more just doing that. Is this healthy? I'm curious.

sounds like some ana tip. but if you're meeting your nutrition needs then there is no issue

I am with Taso, I was about to say pretty much the same thing. If you are doing it just to try to learn how to fight a craving that may cause you to over eat than go for it. If you are doing it to avoid eating entirely, then it's a problem.

That said, why not just have a 1/2 cup serving of the cottage cheese?

If you are hitting your calorie goal and not going over I can't see how it wouldn't be healthy. It might be a bit weird, but so what. I do and have done a lot of weird things so I have no problem in adding a few weird things to my routine to get to my goals. I think this is a great tip.

Why not eat the whole pot of cottage cheese?

    Why non-fat cottage cheese?

You're young dude. Make use of your hormones and get exercising, get strong and fit. Stop fretting over food like a 65 year old.

Always ask yourself can I maintain eating like this in the long run? This is not a sprint. It's a lifestyle, day in day out, consistently making food choices that you enjoy and fall within your calorie number. It sounds like there is nothing wrong with it, I just couldn't keep eating like this forever that's all.

I mean, it's fine if you're eating an otherwise complete diet and you're just trying to get over snacking or something between meals.

But I suspect the people suggesting that are not eating full diets, and it's a trick intended for people who are trying to teach themselves how not to eat, aka the pro-ana people.

It's an pro-ana tip, that I recommend not doing because then it turns into habit and then you fall into the deep dark abyss of the "Habits". They aren't very fun, either.
  • It's not healthy. You're really young it will be easy to lose weight there is no hurry with this. I used to do a lot of crazy things to stay thin when I was younger and in the long run it's not worth it. Take the good advice given here, exercise, eat healthy food and the weight will fall off you. Keep in mind that any type of thinking where you'd want to starve yourself is a sign that something is not going well with you mentally/emotionally.

Be kind to yourself and hang out with people who have a healthy relationship with food. All the best on your journey!!!

If you are eating quality foods, you won't have cravings.

I do think the notion that we should have food constantly is a habit people should break. Unless you have a medical condition, going a few hours without eating isn't a bad thing.

I'd say look at the quality of food you are eating.

Like others said, you are young and male. That youthful metabolism will kick in if you are moving and doing the amount of exercise for a typical 18 year old.

I'm not sure what the point of this would be. Someone suggested that I drink 1-2 glasses of water prior to a meal, but my calories are planned out so if I did that I'd be undereating. I could try that for a dessert, maybe while eating a cookie, but I would finish the cookie and just be bloated. Cottage cheese, maybe after having the 1/2 cup serving, drink a glass of water and then walk away.

I've also read that drinking while eating could slow down digestion so you are supposed to drink water 1/2 hr prior to any meal

My question is why are you trying to avoid eating non-fat cottage cheese? It's full of protein and calcium. Why not just allow yourself to eat some?

You tried it and it worked. Now eat a whole cup of cottage cheese. It works better.

Are you meeting the macros for the day?

    If so; should be ok.
    If not; meet your macros.

    :)

Incidentally, another similar tactic I've seen is "if you feel hungry, have a glass of water then wait half an hour - if you still feel hungry after that, eat some food."

If this is a technique that could stop a binge then maybe it would be good. I have had days where I have my food all planned out and am all good on calories etc for the day but would love to eat three more pieces of pizza...not because I am hungry perse but because I want the taste. I don't know if this would work for a craving or not. I have heard all kinds of tips...like brushing your teeth after dinner so you don't snack etc.

I do agree, that any trick that might be employed to avoid food all together, should be avoided at all cost.
