A New Year's Message

Hi there! It's December 31st, so maybe I'm a little early to catch all the New Year's Resolutioners, but I'll be chilling at home tomorrow, not sitting in front of a keyboard where it's easier to type, so I'm posting now.
I'm not a very good welcome wagon. I have the Introduce Yourself forum filtered out, and sometimes I post some accidental snark despite trying to be good. But I did want to say a few words to the incoming class.
I was a resolutioner, too, 2 years ago. So I can't really look down my nose at anyone for deciding to commit (or recommit) on January 1.
I was actually a returning resolutioner, having previously lost 65 pounds and gaining 45 of it back. I'm currently sitting at 48 pounds lost and not feeling too shabby these days
And I'm FAR from the most successful person here.
Some quick advice (and all you other smart people, please feel free to add. I'll miss a ton):
So with that, welcome and best wishes.

Some quick advice (and all you other smart people, please feel free to add. I'll miss a ton):
- Sit back and get comfy. Read a bit. Lurk. Get a feel for the people and posting style here.
- Read the threads that are stickied at the top of each sub-forum. Great stuff there!
- Use the search function, but with caution - unless it's a very recent post, treat them as read-only. Zombie threads are amusing but also annoying.
- You have questions. Lots of them! Your questions have probably been asked and answered before (refer to previous item). But if you can't find your answer there, please include all the pertinent information when you post so we don't have to spend 3 pages slowly putting puzzle pieces together. Age, sex, current weight, goal weight, activity level, medical conditions that might impact weight loss, and dietary restrictions are a good start.
- The debate folder is very educational, but be ready to back up any claims with credible sources if you decide to dive in.
- *kitten* is the profanity filter. You'll see more than a few kittens around here, and not all of them will be gifs
- Seriously, read the stickies!
So with that, welcome and best wishes.

I began Jan 2 2017 and am down 100 lbs. Here's some tips if you've got a lot to lose.
> Plan a week ahead and stick to the plan. I use platejoy.com to make planning easy.
> Don't diet. Instead change how you eat permanently. Use logging to learn what triggers your excess eating. Avoid those triggers you can, for example I can't watch food tv without eating so I quit watching it. Triggers you can't avoid, modify your reaction to the trigger, for example when I cook I divide it all into servings before setting the table so I won't get seconds. Researching "mindful eating" and "how to change habits" helped me a lot.
> Get your family on your team. I couldn't have done it without my wife's constant support.
> When (not if) you go off the rails, just get back on them and figure out how you will avoid the excess eating behavior next time.
> Have confidence in yourself. You can do this. Discard the clothes when they get too big because you will never need them again4 -
