I'm trying to be mindful of what I'm eating in the new year. My husband and some friends and I are getting together for dinner tonight, and I've previewed the menu, and nothing looks low-calorie. What do I do?

You can be mindful of what you eat earlier in the day, enjoy tonight, and get back on track tomorrow. Can you do even a little exercise like a 30-minute walk today to buy you a few more calories? Another option is to just eat a partial portion of the meal rather than the entire plate.

    Suggestions to help while there:
    • drink water or unsweetened tea rather than higher calorie drinks
    • don't eat appetizers/bread before the meal
    • get an appetizer rather than entree (sometimes the appetizers are smaller and lower calorie, other times they are huge)
    • only eat a portion of the entree rather than the entire plate
    • get sauces on the side if possible and only use a portion of it or none depending on the dish and your preference
    • skip dessert

Depends...I don't typically eat out all that often, so in most cases an evening out isn't a big deal and I just enjoy myself and go about my business as usual. If I have a lot of more or less back to back social events going on, I just watch things earlier in the day and have a small breakfast or skip it altogether and a lite lunch...like maybe just a big garden salad.

Ask the server for help. Get the fish or chicken without the cream sauce. Ask for veggies or fruit instead of French fries.

Lots of folks have special diets. The restaurants are used to it. If the place is any good, it shouldn’t be an issue.

If all else fails- grilled chicken Caesar, dressing on the side, no croutons.
