1/2 marathon - long runs - exhaustion?

Yes. Normal. As you become more fit, the 8 mile runs won't tax you, but the 18 mile runs will.
^^^ Totally this! I can do 8 in a snap. However, the 18 I ran this past Sunday left me a complete mess for the rest of the day! Makes the 20 on deck for this weekend even more daunting.
But, keep at it. Pretty soon you'll have the RUSH of crossing the finish line of your first half marathon!!0 -
In my experience when I was running I felt the same way and just laid on the couch all day. The awesome thing was by the end of my training I did a 10 mile taper run and when I was finished I felt like refreshed like I just ran around the block or something to warm up.
Your body will adapt and you will get better at your recovery.
Side note would be, I am assuming you are also attempting to lose weight yes? This will also impact your recovery a bit more than someone who is in maitenance.0 -
Usually when I hit anything above 13 miles - I become useless for hours. I can usually be found in bed with a pint of ben and jerrys, ice packs, gatorade, water and legs elevated0
