Fat Christians

Does anyone else notice the big, fat elephant in the room? How easy is it for chubby Christians to look down on, pray for, and/or identify people with drug, alcohol, porn, smoking, overspending, and/or cheating issues?

I'm talking about myself too really. All the others are so easily identified. Sally's smoking again, Jay's still struggling with his porn addiction, Tom's wife is still having an affair,....... we'll pray for them. Is it time for lunch yet? Where does everybody want to go, Chili's good?

In 2004, Mike Huckabee's doctor told him he needed to lose weight or he'd be dead in 10 years. He lost weight, wrote a book, and has since regained his weight despite knowing that it could kill him soon. He also staged an eat-in at Chik-Fil-A last year, to protest gay marriage. Eat fried chicken and waffle fries to show your support.

Wouldn't that be like an alcoholic staging a drink-in at the Party Barn to protest flag burning?

Is it because so many of us are overweight, that mentioning that particular vice has become too taboo to even mention? How many people have had interventions from their loved ones, because of their weight?

We need to support each other. We need prayers too. I was with some good friends last night, who are also overweight. They were leading a small cell group, and the topic was the 10 Commandments, which easily identify what we are not supposed to do. The topic turned into all things we aren't supposed to do, but nobody mentioned that we should really stop overeating, because so many of us do it.

Sorry, ridiculous rant I suppose. I keep hearing sermons that are supposedly "tough talks", and they are usually about how people shouldn't live together before marriage, drink too much, porn, etc. The REALY tough talk, to me at least, would be tell everybody to start eating right. Wondering if that never gets mentioned, because all the chubbies (us included) comprise a mass (no kidding, right?) percentage of the congregation and the offended ones might leave.

This is a struggle, no bones about it! It's not something never worth discussing. I'd really like to rip the scab off of this taboo subject, so we can start seeing some progress. But obviously, the best thing I can do is lose the weight and keep my mouth shut, and hope to be an example for others.

So I posted my little rant here and just finished my Chobani. Now I'm off to the gym. Pray for me!
