Sugar calories

Are sugar calories counted in the total calories listed on food products? Example, if a product has 100ca, and it contains 4 grams of sugar (approximately 16 calories) is that 16 already in the total calories or do you have to add 16 to the 100?????

It's included in the carbohydrate count along with starches and dietary fiber.

Very curious why you would think they might not be included... 🤔

Maybe the label says something about 'added sugar'? 🤷 I dunno...that's all I've got.

Give or take the allowed rounding and margin of error rules, sure.
Is there an example product that looks off? Or even more likely, an MFP entry that looks off?

Yeah, the "added sugar" bit is now on labels in the U.S. and it's something fairly new so I imagine people are confuzzled.

What would be the point of having calories on the label if all the calories for all the ingredients weren’t included in the total calories per serving? That wouldn’t be very beneficial.

I can see why it would be confusing. In effect they are listing it twice.

They've done that for ages with fat and sat fat and carbs and sugar and protein. It's not some weird new thing to list some components separately as well as in the total.
