“Hey rabbit,” Chucky yelled, but the stupid thing just sat there. He picked up a pebble and threw it at the small animal, but the pebble was too small and it fell short. I don’t think Chucky really wanted to hit it anyway, but he probably wanted to at least scare it.
Come to think of it, I don’t know why he was yelling at the rabbit anyway. We’d were riding our bikes home and stopped to watch the Ice Cream Man tinkle past, strains of Scott Joplin’s “Entertainer” warping as he slowed down, waiting for us to flag him down.
It was hot, and we wanted ice cream, but we didn’t have any money so we just watched him pick up speed once he realized we were just a few broke kids.
That’s when Chucky saw the rabbit, just sitting near the shrubs in front of Old Man Jenkin’s place.
We were used to seeing rabbits in the neighborhood, maybe in the early morning when we were riding to school, or late in the evening when we were rushing to get home before sundown so we wouldn’t get in trouble.
But we never saw them out in the middle of the day like this.
Chucky picked up another rock and threw it, a bigger stone this time, and with more force. It zinged past the rabbit and into the shrubs a few feet away from the rabbit.
“C’mon Chucky, quit it,” I told him. “You’re gonna end up putting a rock through the old man’s window and my parents will kill me. I’ll be grounded for a month!”
Chucky just sneered at me. “You hit it then,” he said, picking up a few more rocks and offering one to me. I put my hands up and declined.
“I’m not throwing a stone at a rabbit. It’s just sitting there, anyway.”
Chucky turned and we both stared at it again. Just its back, a stubby tail pressed motionless into the grass.
He reared back to throw another stone. This one sailed true, and with a thunk that I heard from way back on the sidewalk, the rock caromed off the poor animal’s back.
It slowly turned to face us, and time stood still. This wasn’t any normal rabbit.
A long, thick tongue hung from its slack-jaw, so long that the drooling tip of it dragged through the grass as it turned. One of its eyes protruded unnaturally, like it was trying to jump out of its socket but couldn’t quite make it. And it wasn’t on all fours, like you’d expect a rabbit to be. It was sitting on its hind legs like a raccoon, sharpened talons protruding from the soft fur on its paws.
“Chucky,” I said as I slowly gripped the handlebars of my bike. “We should get outta here.”
He didn’t need my instruction. Chucky jumped onto his bike and we took off, pedalling without stopping until our sides were split with pain. Neither of us looked back; there was no point in seeing if it would catch us or not, because in our minds, it was right behind us the whole way.
We never talked about it, and we never saw it again.
I did wet the bed every night for two weeks after my little sister bought a pet bunny with her allowance, and my parents couldn’t figure out why.0 -
