Dealing with Age and Mobility Issues

Hi everyone,
I'm new to Fitness Pal, but have been struggling with my weight since early childhood. Since age 79 (I'm now 87) I've also been dealing with an inherited neuropathy that makes me use a walker. Walking so slowly, it's hard to get a real workout. The idea of running, or even walking fast enough to be out of breath, is a joke! A year ago I finally found a recumbent stepper that lets me get good cardio exercise which is a real help. I'm also going to seated exercise classes, another big help.

I want to lose about 25 pounds, and I want to make counting calories and the other nutrients a lifestyle, so my goal is to lose just a half-pound a week. It seems so slow but hey! even at that rate I'll reach my goal in a year. I have to watch out for the nasty gremlins of getting discouraged when the loss isn't fast and getting bored with the whole process. One thing that helps is that I got out of the sugar habit several years ago and now I really love my veggies and lean meats.

Positivity is a must for me! I love JCGNewFit’s attitude. You sound like you have a doable plan, and I commend you. I’m 67 and determined to get back in shape using a healthy, whole foods way of eating with portion control. If it’s not something I can do for the rest of my life, it doesn’t make sense for now either. I, too, have health challenges, but want to lose 40 pounds which will help everything; mobility, self-confidence, and budget (I have plenty of clothes to fit my smaller figure!😉) Until I got past 60 and had health problems, I never understood why people had trouble losing weight. Now I have something very powerful....empathy! I’m doing this for my heath. Anything else is a pure bonus.

Water aerobics or water walking may also be a very good option for you. There are flotation belts available to keep you buoyant and upright so you don't need to be a swimmer to take advantage. Regardless of any weight loss benefits exercise as you age is an essential part of keeping healthy and mobile. Here is one particular flotation belt with some videos:
