Do you mean "weight loss" is one of the selections of programs on the treadmill? If so, then it won't specifically help you lose weight. Eating fewer calories then you burn WILL.

The treadmills (and all cardio machines) have options for various "programs" just for variety, such as "fat burn", "cardio (something or other)", "interval training", etc.

Half an hour on the treadmill will burn some calories. How many depends on how fast you are going and thus how far. I would ignore the calorie burn that the TM gives you and use MFPs numbers instead since TM numbers tend to be very inflated. Exercise is good for your health, your fitness, and will allow you a little more flexibility in your diet. It doesn't burn a lot of calories unless you do a lot of it. Focus more on what you are eating in order to lose weight. Increase your exercise as you get more fit. The extra calories can make a difference between feeling starved and being comfortable with your diet.

    You can't outrun your fork.

Focus on learning how to log your food and staying within your calorie goals. That's it. Exercise will give you a couple or three hundred extra calories per hour - I can eat 400 calories in just one good sized cookie.

Weight loss happens in the kitchen.

Odds are the weight loss setting on the treadmill is designed to keep your heart rate in the fat burn zone and not in the cardio zone. Like the others have said, the food intake will be your biggest defining factor but so long as you stick to the treadmill and have a healthy calorie deficit you will see the weight start to drop.
