I'm so excited! I just found out the farmer's market is starting on may 4th. It's 2 miles away from my house. I plan on walking every week unless it's raining. One challenge is I will have 3 of my kids with. And if your a parent you know kids and walking for more then 5 mins don't go together. So 2 of them will be in a stroller. And the 5 year old will probably ride his bike or take rollor skates. And the 2nd challenge is I have a gigantic hill as an obstacle. Like my kid will have to walk it and not ride anything because he will go into traffic from not being able to stop. So going down shouldn't be to much of a problem. But my idea for going up it is, me pushing the stroller and tie my 5 year to my waist and pull him up in whatever he is riding.
That would work, right?

Why not see if your 5 year old can get up it on their own power? If he can ride down it safely then I would think he would be able to walk up it baring other physical limitations. The only way you'd be able to tow the 5 year old on a bike is if you attached the bike to yourself (not the kid to yourself). Attaching a child on roller skates/blades to yourself sounds like a recipe waiting to happen.1

He would be able to get up the hill on his own. He's done it before. I'm mainly think about the long walk then getting to the hill. The hill is very close to my house. And after walking pretty much 4 miles he is going to be very tired.0

How about getting a play date for the 5 YO so you can just take the stroller?1

Why not do a test walk to see how far everyone can go? And you can see firsthand how you will handle the walk, and if it's initially tougher than you anticipated you could build up stamina before May. Kids sometimes surprise you, my oldest nephew walked a lot when he was a little youngin, a lot more than people expected him to. Was never forced mind you, and my sis always had the stroller but more often than not she'd be pushing an empty stroller while he walked beside it lol1

From personal experience, it *sounds* a lot easier to pull a kid on wheels than it actually is. It’s like physics breaks down or something and nothing works anymore, I don’t even know. Maybe try that hill as a test a few times before you commit to the four miles? Since it’s close to your house you could just see if you can work together to pull him up. He has to do a good bit of balancing if you’re going to manage it. At that age, my kids could walk that distance but they liked to be dramatic about it. 🤣 Maybe he would manage the hill better if you buy him some yummy fruit for a snack on the way home.1

Honestly I suspect he might get bored and want to be picked up, but probably would have enough stamina to actually do it. I suggest trying it out multiple times before you do it in May. Here's a rather lovely post from Bike Portland as inspiration. Note that 5 year old's commute is much steeper and longer than the walk you're thinking about doing and they definitely worked up to it (though it didn't take her that long from what it sounds like and it was of her own volition). And yes, I would assume that 5 year old was riding in the rain on a very regular basis.1 -
I know my 5 year old can make it half way. There is a park 1 mile from our house which is half way between my house and where the farmer's market is held. Maybe we will start walking there as soon as it gets nice out and the snow melts away. Thanks everyone.1

When I was 5 years old I walked 2 miles to school everyday and then 2 miles home.. I enjoyed it! Maybe it’s time to start a habit? My parents taught me about traffic on these walks and important lessons like stopping and looking both ways for cars..make it a game, look for new and exciting routes, create an adventure.1
