Jerky and Sugar

Why does jerky have sugar/sweeteners added? I am having a hard time finding (turkey) jerky products that DON'T taste sweet, but I otherwise like the kind that comes in small pieces and tastes more like pepperoni/Slim Jims (kinda gross, I know!).
Any suggestions for online brands that I may like??
