so I’m thinking to buy a protein shake. I find it difficult to hit my protein goal daily so I think a protein shake would help. My goal is to lose weight.
Is Whey protein good? I dnt wanna bulk up. I just wanna lose weight. Also what time of the day would u drink this??? After or before workout or both???

It’s just like any other food. If you need protein whey is one of the best choices. Count the calories like you would any other food. It will help lose, gain or maintain depending on its effect on your deficit.

Protein doesn't make you bulk up, nor does it cause weight loss, it takes a pretty sustained effort to bulk up which generally involves eating at a calorie surplus and a structured strength training program.

What Protein does do is help you to maintain the muscle you already have when you are eating at a deficit.

Time of day to consume it is an entirely individual preference.

As tinkerbell said, consuming more protein won't make you bulk up or cause you to lose weight. Bulking up requires working your muscles and losing weight requires consuming less calories than you burn throughout the day.

However, consuming more protein will likely help you feel full longer and will help you maintain your current muscle mass as you eat at a deficient.

The time of day you consume protein doesn't matter. Just fit it into your calorie goals for the day and you'll be good.

Personally, I don't have the time or energy for powder proteins on a regular basis. I buy pre-made Premier Protein shakes and drink them for breakfast on days when I'm running late. They're 160 calories, 30g Protein and only 1g Sugar.

I purchase Premier Protein and use them as meal replacements for breakfast and dinner. In between i fit in multiple 100 calorie snacks. It helps me sustain until dinner, where I have room to eat a good dinner with my family. I get my protein for the day and calories to spare.

Whey is just a supplement...whey doesn't bulk you up nor does it do anything for losing weight. It would be the same thinking as eating chicken will bulk me up. It's just a protein supplement.

Unfortunately most protein shakes contain a lot of added garbage. Because they are not government regulated, you take your chances when consuming them.

There are all kinds of protein available in raw food form. This is a healthier choice.

Have you tried SKYR or Greek style plain yogurt? The brand of SKYR yogurt I eat has a whopping 21g of protein in just 3/4 of a cup (140 cals). Mixed with 1/4 cup raw pumpkin seed kernels and 1/2 cup of fruit and the protein content is 37g for 420 calories. It's a super meal !!!

So is raw chicken a healthier choice for protein? I'd be concerned about salmonella <shrug>

And hate to break it to you, but yogurt isn't raw, unless you are making it yourself and using raw milk and only heating it to whatever arbitrary temp has been designated as "still raw" by the health food industry.

OP, protein powder is just food, just like eating dairy or eggs or a piece of chicken. I do often have a protein shake on days I'm coming up short on protein and don't have enough calories for something else or just don't want to eat any other protein sources. The calories count, so log it.

Muscles develop from strength training/exercise, protein is just the building block your muscles use IF you give them a reason to grow. As a woman, you really don't have to worry about "accidentally" getting too muscular - it takes consistent hard work.

I use ON Whey Isolate...it doesn't have a lot of added garbage. Whey is just a bi-product of cheese making. Mine has cocoa, lecithin (occurs naturally in animal products), sucralose, and potassium.
