Samsung S health Pedometer help

I had been using a fitbit until I lost it last week and cannot find it. I recently got a samsung Galaxy S4 which has a built in pedometer. Calorically it appears to only track the additional calories from steps and does not add calories from BMR just sitting around.

For example: on my fitbit on a day when I walked 8850 steps It reads 3000 cals burned. On my phone today for 8839 steps it says 502 calories. My assumption is that this is in addition to BMR (as per MPF goals set at lightly active I burn 2500 from just normal activity)? Should I add this in as exercise? Also, to complicate things I worked out today (elliptical) and had my phone on me during the workout. If I add the exercise calories from my HRM am I double counting here?

What's the best way to keep tabs on this?
