How can I get more stamina and feel less exhausted? Any tips, suggestions or thoughts are appreciated.
P.S I'm an older man but I still enjoy playing basketball.

Thanks

I see myself as a weekend warrior. I've been trying to incorporate more daily exercise etc. Stretching, walking, and light cardio. As far as fueling, I think I am doing ok staying hydrated eating greens and taking vitamins. It might be my age too. I'm in my early 50's but I don't want to slow down.

I'm a die hard basketball player and ex runner. I want to start running again too. I've been looking into purchasing a small nanual treadmill for the winters. For now, I've incorporated walking and stairs as well. I just feel exhausted all the time whem I'm involved in a full court basketball game. I do give 110% of myself in a game. The league is mixed in age from 20's to 50's.

Yep. More cardio, my friend. C25K is a good starting program to get back into running.

    Devil_Dawg, you's just a kid. ;) (I'm 63.)

Have you talked to your doctor? Ruled out any issues with heart, lungs, thyroid & whatnot? Blood tests showing no deficiencies in iron, D, & that sort of thing? Getting enough sleep? No smoking? No excessive alcohol or other recreational similar stuff? Eating enough fats, protein, carbs, calories (alongside the greens)?

If that's all good, then yeah, more cardio . . . probably C25K as Quiksylver suggested, or just a manageable/increasing volume of LISS of choice, to start.

If you don't want to slow down, the way to do it is . . . don't slow down. ;)

Seriously: With aging, so far, I'm not seeing a huge difference yet in what I can do, if I train up to it. I do notice a little slower recovery (especially from injury), and a little faster detraining. Keep moving! ;)

    Best wishes!

Quicksylver296, AnnPT77, and dewd2 - Thank you all for your valuable feedback.
Sorry for my ignorance but what is C25K and LISS? Great advice on working out more during the week and being smart about it. As far as my health, I'm in fair health but do suffer from sleep apnea which I'm addressing in April this year. I also have old military and sports injuries in my neck and lower back etc , ruptured and herniated disc and plantar fascitis going on a few years. However it's never stopped me.
Overall, my food intake and choices are ususlly good. I take my vitamins, eat in adequate proportions and eat my veggies.

Again thank you all for your feedback and please keep them coming.

    Thank you all

Then start running again. That'll build your stamina back up. Playing high intensity sports like basketball and hockey without good base fitness has killed lots of players in their '50s......I'm 63 and retired from soccer a few years ago. I was so happy when the over 50 league started, it's hard on the ego but keeping up with players in their 30s is usually an unrealistic expectation.

Getting your sleep apnea under control may be a help on several fronts (helped me).

Given all the musculoskeletal issues, do you do any (careful) regular program of stretching or yoga? Won't help with windedness or exhaustion, but a regular practice seems to give the joints a nice well-oiled feeling, and create some extra resilience. If you don't do it currently, a nice on-ramp is just starting small with a couple of daily stretches that feel good to you.

Yes, the sleep is probably a big factor. You can try nasal strips for the apnea. But if it's related to being overweight, focus on reversing that.

I'd do some sort of high-intensity interval cardio at least once during the week, and preferably twice. Cardio capacity seems to decline pretty quickly. :+1:

I stretch everyday but I may tackle some yoga 2/3 times per week. I will also try the nasal strips.

Thank you all for your comments and support.

I totally get you. I'm 5'8 but they have me playing as a forward (whew). I will take your advice and work out more during the week. I'm hoping this will help me out.
