Workouts through the day

Is it still beneficial to do small workouts through the day vs an hour at a time?

Doing short workouts throughout the day is better than not working out at all. As to beneficial it depends on what your goal is, if it's to improve cardiovascular fitness and endurance you would benefit more from a longer workout ie keeping your heart-rate elevated for a longer period of time.

If it's more of a strength thing then breaking it up into shorter sessions will probably work fine.

It depends on what you mean by beneficial. From a fitness standpoint, there isn't a ton of benefit to doing small workouts throughout the day as increasing your aerobic fitness and endurance requires a more constant workload. Keep in mind also that it doesn't have to be an hour at a time session. My weekday cardio sessions are usually 30-45 minutes and my lifting sessions are usually around 30-40 minutes because that's what I have time for. I do longer rides on weekends.

In regards to general health, there is a great benefit of moving more throughout the day, which would include small workouts throughout the day.

I do regular training sessions on my bike and in the weight room, but I also try to get up and move every hour just to increase my overall activity.
