Different calorie goals per day

So I set my calorie goal at a slight deficit on workout days, and a larger deficit on rest days because I won’t need as much fuel...
Is that the best way to do it for weight loss if I still want to maybe see some newbie gains as well?

Sure, you can do it that way, but the way MFP is designed is that you will log your exercise on the day you do it and eat the calories you earned from it back.
(You have to log strength training in the Cardiovascular section on https://www.myfitnesspal.com/exercise/diary/ - the Strength Training section is just for notes.1
