Hi. When I first started losing weight, I'll admit that I avoided sweets like the plague. My "sweets" were fruit, chocolate protein shakes, or a square of 99% dark chocolate. After I lost 15 pounds in two months, I eventually added things back into my diet, including sweets, and kept losing. It's been four years since I lost weight and I've been happily maintaining my weight at 113 to 117 pounds. These four years have included cupcakes, cake, brownies, doughnuts, etc.
I can completely understand thinking that sweets will hinder weight loss; after all, they tend to be high in calories. As long as you're eating them in moderation and sticking to your calorie goals, you will lose weight. Weight loss doesn't require giving up everything you love and spending your days eating bland food. I wish you the best of luck!16 -
I eat chocolate almost everyday lol. At work we get those snickers and Milky Way minis for people to snack on and I'll usually have a couple a day. It's about 100 calories for two but I never have cravings for more because I get some everyday, and it's not so much that it's crowding out protein and other nutrients that I need. This doesn't work for everyone, but it works for me. I've lost 37 pounds so far, still have 43 to lose but it's been good steady progress.8

That’s awesome, thank you 😊Maxematics wrote: »Hi. When I first started losing weight, I'll admit that I avoided sweets like the plague. In theory it doesn't matter what you eat as long as you maintain a calorie deficit. But some foods make it harder to do that. Personally I found that eating sweets not only ate up my calorie allowance, it made me crave more sweets. But other people seem to manage with a small treats. Try it out - you'll soon find out which type you are :-D10

I eat chocolate daily. twice a day. many days I also eat a small portion of chips (though I've recently switched up that snack). I have a little jar of jelly means (portioned and included in my diary) I pick at. I still have been loosing weight at desired rate.
remember this is a good time to learn eating habits to maintain for life. Unless you can cut out a food group for LIFe it's best not to cut it out during weight lose period. Some do for a short period at first to get started but at some point we need to learn how to "handle" these foods in day to day life (be it daily, weekly, monthly) during our journey.
some foods I had to remove from the house at first and slowly bring back in in portions I can handle. some foods are "eat out only" so I eat a potion then there is no more.10 -
I’ve lost 84 pounds, and while I’ve made huge changes in my eating habits (cooking at home way more, cutting way back on portions, planning meals and snacks in advance), I still make tons of room in my food diary for sweet stuff, namely dark chocolate and peanut butter, or Christmas cookies, or Halloween candy, etc.1

Weight loss is all about eating less calories than your body burns. How you spend those calories is your choice. Weigh, meaure and track everything you eat and drink. As long as you have a calorie deficit, you will lose weight. As long as you have no medical reason for avoiding certain foods, all foods in moderation and portion control.5

This past Sunday and Monday, about half of my calories were from cookies and cheesecake. I was still within my calorie goal and my weight is fine.
I don't usually eat mostly cookies, and it's not the best idea from a nutrition standpoint, obviously, but if you want sweets you can work them into your calories.

Think of it this way - you are making a pattern for how you want to control your weight for the rest of your life -do you intend to skip the sweets and such for ever? If not, then it is best to learn now how to work them into your eating so that you can still enjoy them later as well.6 -
I allot 200 calories a day for ice cream or cookies during the evening. Just have to plan ahead!5
-
I shared a Bourbon Cake with vanilla bean ice cream with my husband yesterday. Delicious!
So far I've lost 30 pounds. When I want a sweet treat I have one. I just watch my portion sizes.4 -
55 lb lost, with a 100-calorie portion of dark chocolate or cookies whenever I could save up the calories. I probably have sweets 2-3 days a week.2
-
I ate sweets just about every day when I was losing weight. I like to have something sweet at the end of my lunch and most days I was able to fit it into my calories.1
-
I ate sweets aka chocolate every single day when losing and now in maintenance. I factor in approx 200 cals per day for whatever I fancy it's all about the deficit.3
-
I eat two chocolate wafer bars every day. That's a whopping 260kcal of sweat stuff No problem though as the one during work keeps me going much better than veggies or other things in the afternoon, and the one after dinner is just indulgence.1

Chocolate chip cookies - almost every day. An occasional Coca Cola with a burger or pizza (because what's a better drink than that with those things?), but not always.
Drizzle a teaspoon of sugar (15 kcal) on a bowl of strawberries.
Still lost my original 48 pounds with those regularly a part of my way of eating.1 -
Dry cereal (I like the kind that's a little sweet, like Krave or Corn Squares, not the sugar-frosted with marshmallows). I have an ice cream treat almost daily. Chapman's makes these frozen yogurt sandwiches for 130 calories each. I keep my homemade desserts to 200 calories or fewer per serving. Some are more nutritious, like the apple-pear sauce I made last week at 143 calories per serving. Some are just a small portion of rich decadence, like the vanilla cookies I'm making this week at 90 calories per cookie. It varies. Fiber One bars are good options, too.
ETA: I've dropped 108 lbs this way and closing on the last 10.4 -
I ate all sorts of treats (I tend more towards fried foods than sweets, though) when I was losing weight and then in maintenance. Its the calories that matter for weight loss, as many have said.
The biggest caveat is many sweet treats can be calories dense and can easily make you go over your deficit. And everyone goes over once in a while. Lots of folks will create a little extra room by saving a few daily calories when they know they have a special event comping up, or they eat smaller portions of their favorites, or they find substitutes that fill their needs.1 -
I consume sweets frequently, and as long as I am in a calorie deficit, I lose weight despite the substance of my diet.2
-
I try really hard not to eliminate anything completely - that just makes you miserable - it's learning moderation and/or how to substitute. As long as you burn more than you eat - you can do it.
So either figure out how to burn it off, or make it fit into your calories. ie. 1 cup strawberries/2 Tbs Light Cool Whip/1Tbs Choc syrup - pretty tasty - about 150 calories - or a small serving of ice cream about 110 - Hershey kisses - 22 cal a piece. I do the same to get my glass of wine, or whatever I want to indulge on.1 -
I think this is really depends on the person. At the end of the day it comes down to calories in and calories out. Sweets just make it more difficult and will lead to a hungry spot in the day you consume. I tend to avoid, just because it’s a real weakness of mine, and I feel like it would be a slippery slope for me. But for most people with reasonable willpower, I don’t see an issue, you just have to know your limitations on that.5

Not necessarily. Especially if the treat in question contains protein or fiber. A 90-calorie cookie doesn't leave me hungry if I include it in my day. If I were to forego my normal dinner so I'd have room for a 600-calorie apple turnover, that's another story. But I enjoy setting aside a few calories daily for an indulgence.

Calorie deficit? How do I know how many calories I burn?

Calorie deficit? How do I know how many calories I burn?
You put your stats into MFP's calculator (age, weight, height, activity level, reasonable deficit) and it'll give you a pretty fair estimate. Bear in mind MFP also gives you a deficit so you ideally want to eat to that number, not under it. You could also get something like a fitbit.2 -

Some people can find ways to avoid this, though. I find that when I eat something sweet (candy, cookie, whatever) at the end of lunch, it doesn't cause any issues for me. Since I do tend to get hungry when I have something sweet with breakfast or on it's own as a mid-day snack, I have no idea why this is . . . I just know that it is. Other people may have different ways to make it work for them and I wouldn't go so far as to say I am convinced it is positive for everyone to do it, but I wouldn't assume that sweets make it more difficult for everyone.5 -
Thank you so much everyone. This is very helpful.2

I include sweets almost daily, mostly at the end of my day so that I don’t forego more filling foods if I’m hungrier that day.
As others have mentioned, mini sizes are excellent for this! They aren’t many calories, can easily be scaled up / down, and since you can add them in routinely it prevents feeling deprived.
I enjoy stocking up on my favorite “special flavors” after holidays; often I’m able to have them a few times a week for months! I’ve also found I prefer ice cream bars to a bowl of ice cream. Despite it being an equivalent amount, grabbing a bar and enjoying feels more satisfying than weighting out a portion from an ice cream tub!1 -
any type of "bad" food in moderation is okay as long as it's not happening on a regular basis. Many people incorporate a "cheat day" into their regimen because it gives them an opportunity to say hey it's okay once in a while...weight loss, that is sustained weight loss, is a journey not a destination. it is a slow process and "falling off the wagon" once in a while is okay as long as you jump right back on the wagon!4

Yes I eat sweets. Halo Top and Enlightened usually on weekends. Pizelle sandwiches with PB2 or dessert hummus almost daily. Sometimes just frozen fruit heated in the microwave with cheese cheese, greek yogurt, or whipped cream.
And if it's a novelty, like recently I found Thai Coconut, Jalapeno, and toffee m&ms, I'll make room for a serving.0
