When a remote control for the TV seemed like a rediculous over indulgent device. (and they were usually actually connected by wire with a fairly substantial box on your coffee table and 13 big push buttons for the channel selection. Volume and power were still functions you had to get off your lazy butt to perform)

What do you mean when? I still have mine! lol I don't use it as a phone, but the thing is indestructible and the alarm on it can be counted to wake me up unlike my current phone.
