Looking at a recipe on the site calling for hemp seed hearts. What purpose does it serve in the recipe? I'm guessing nutrition like using flax seeds, and if so is there a good substitute for it? I'm trying to avoid buying something I don't use at this time.

If you told us more about the specific recipe, you would get better advice. What kind of food is it? Is there much liquid? Are the hemp seeds soaked in liquid? Do they get cooked? Are they just added at the end (sprinkled on a finished dish)? What nutritional benefit are you looking to get?

It's really hard to speculate without an idea of what the recipe is. It could be there for flavor or texture, or for some nutritional value in the seeds. It could also be there just because the person who created the recipe had them handy, or was being 'trendy'.
