I'm an 18 year old male and I am fresh off what could be considered a very long cut. About one year ago I committed to going from 225lbs to around 150lbs. I wasn't super overweight, but at the time I was relatively short and did not care for the way I looked in the mirror. I knew nothing about losing weight other than you need to eat less than your caloric maintenance. So I cut extremely hard, and at times in an incredibly unhealthy manner, but thankfully nothing bad came of it and I am now maintaining at around 160 (I grew from 5'10" to 6'1" and decided that being 150lbs made me look a bit like a drug addict.) I went to the gym throughout the cut and started resistance training a little bit, but only using machines and occasionally picking up a dumbbells. I recently bought a decent bench and have begun to get a little more serious about putting on muscle. I even found a tried and true workout routine that I've been following for the past three weeks or so. I understand that I have to be in a caloric surplus to gain weight, but all the online calculators give pretty drastically different calorie goals and I would really like to avoid putting on a lot of fat if at all possible.

It’s going to be all about trial and error. Set a calorie goal of 2800, do that for 6-8 weeks; depending on results, add or subtract calories.1
