is figure of speech meaning diet versions.

Yes we all know soda has no fat in it - is not a literal term.

Just like -in Australia anyway - many people use the term skinny milk - yes of course milk cant really be skinny and people can be overweight eating or drinking too much of anything - but is figure of speech everyone knows means skim milk.
Then gets extended to other things- eg skinny latte - meaning one made with skim milk.

I figured it had linguistic, slang origins. It's fun to guess people's origins based on key terms, especially if I've heard them before on UK tv shows, like "five a day", "takeaways", etc.
  • There is some wisdom in cutting normal drinks with water. You can buy a jug of apple juice and cut that 50/50 with water as you drink it and you get only a slightly watered-down taste for half the calories. You can do this with other fruit juices as well, until you are used to just drinking water again.

I'm not sure what five a day refers to?

Takeaways is same as US takeouts - both terms make equal sense but for some reason one develops in one place and one in another.

Bit like footpath and sidewalk - same thing and both make sense as a term but one is used one place and one another.

    Yes, language is fascinating :)

Even in Australia there are so many different names given to things, depending on your state. Have you ever been to Victoria and asked for bung fritz?
