Recording steps

I have been logging my steps ever since I got the app. Sometimes I go out in my car and obviously don’t want that recorded as steps. Other than switching off my phone data, is there any other way of freezing the steps taken, without losing all the previous recoded days history? Thank you

Do you mean that you’re afraid that steps will be recorded while you are driving? They won’t...only when you are actually walking.

Yes that’s exactly what I mean. If I am driving slowly, how does my phone know I am not walking? 🤔 Thanks Suzy.

Is this the tracker built into MFP? It isn't getting your steps via GPS. For one, GPS tells miles, not steps. For another, that would take extreme amounts of battery to keep a 24 hour track with even a minimal precision - not to mention some levels it can't get as a phone's GPS has a resolution of maybe 3 meters at best last I saw.
Phone based step trackers make a much simpler use of the accelerometers in your phone to estimate steps based on the up and down motion of a step while it is in your pocket.

Yes, basically, it senses the specific movements of walking when counting steps. If your phone is stationary in a moving car, it's not going to record steps. It doesn't use GPS. So, if you were walking on a treadmill, it would record your steps even though you weren't actually going anywhere.
