Stones converted into pounds

I have just been working out my stone (12.9) into pounds and when I use a converter, even mfp it always says 181lb. I just checked this out on a calculator (14×12 then add 9) it comes up 177lb. I then looked at a chart rather than a converter because by this time I was really confused but intrigued it said 12.9 is 177lb. I know it is only 4 lb but when trying to lose weight it is, to me, a big deal and a massive difference.
Has anyone come across this?

    I’m American but if a stone is 14 pounds then 0.9 stone is 12.6 pounds. So 168 + 12.6 = 180.6 round up to 181. No?

    I am from the UK but how I work it out is 14lb in a stone then x 12 as in the stone then + the 9lb so....
    14×12=168 then + 9lb = 177lb
    Not 181lb.

    It’s probably a format problem, you are converting 12.9 stone to pounds so the calculator thinks you are inputting 12 stones plus 0.9 stones but this is not the case. You are actually inputting 12 stones plus 9 pounds which are two different measurements expressed as a single one, so you need to convert only 12 stones then add 9 lbs to it. That makes 177 lbs 🙂

    As monkeefan says, it's a format problem. A calculator isn't going to understand that 12.9 stones is supposed to refer to 12 stones and 9 pounds, it's going to think it refers to 12 stones and 0.9 stones, which is 168 + 12.6 pounds. To convert your weight into pounds, you have to put just the 12 stones into the calculator and then add the 9 pounds on your own.

    monkeefan is correct. If you want to use the google converter, just type it out in google search in words like this "12 stone and 9 pounds in lbs" for an accurate result. Typing it as 12.9 will make it assume you want 0.9 of a stone while 12 stone and 9 pounds is actually ~12.6 st.

    ETA: I like using the google converter. You don't need to visit any site, you just type in your desired conversions in google search (or in the address bar if google is your default search engine) and it will give you the result. Works for almost anything, from weight to distance to currency, to temperature...etc.

    When expressing weight in stones, typically one says 12 stone 9, and the 9 is 9 lbs, not 0.9 stone (12.6 lbs). I think that's where the confusion is. OP means 12 stone and 9 lbs, not 12 stone and 0.9 stone.
