Shoes for achilles tendonitis

Having been diagnosed with achilles tendonitis (and a gout flare up on top, ouch) the doctor told me to never go barefoot again, but instead always wear shoes with good heel cushioning.

Any suggestions for shoe brands to look for? It need to be a kind of sandals/open shoes because of the heat (I live in Thailand).
From previous experience, the sales staff in various shoe shops is not knowledgeable enough about the products, to give appropriate advice, so I need to know in advance what to look/ask for..

Are Birkenstock sandals available in Thailand? They're German. They have good support. This is the pair I wear:

They take about 3 - 7 days to break in depending on how much you walk.

For regular shoes I wear Dansko and for boots, Merrell.

I strongly suggest when you find a pair that works for your feet, you buy two or three pairs. Have a pair you wear outdoors and another pair for just in your house.

Good luck, it is true in the US as well, shoe salespersons cannot help with this kind of thing.
