cell phone etiquitte at the gym

I go to the gym 5 times a week and there's always someone there talking on the phone. They aren't looking at an app or watching a movie. They just talk on the phone. I understand it passes time when doing cardio. It doesn't bother me (most of the time) unless they are right next to me. I see other ppl across the gym sitting down on a bench talking. I wonder if they are a emergency medical doctor or waiting for a baby delivery. Something important like that. Maybe they are expecting a very important phone call.

They have a big notice in the e/r rooms at the hospital saying 'please turn off your cell phone. if you are on the phone when the doctor comes in, he/she may move to another patient.' I don't think you're supposed to have them on in a movie theatre either. And not very good at a funeral especially if you have a funny ring tone.

But the gym, maybe that's different. It's like a store. You walk around shopping and talking. You work out, you talk. I personally find it rude. You?

people talking on the phone at the gym annoys me

Under no circumstances should you use it in the locker room

i use an app on mine to track my lifts, so i use it for that as well as listening to music.

Don't care myself as long as they don't do it while taking over an equipment for hours. I exaggerate, but if they want to play with the phone in between sets or off in some corner it doesn't effect or bother me.

If you're doing cardio and you can still have a conversation on the phone you're probably not working hard enough.

I use mine for music and to track my Fitbit.

That being said, if anyone from my family i.e.; husband, kids, MIL call me I'll quickly answer it, let them know I'm at the gym and I'll call them back. Everyone else goes to voicemail. But with my family, if it's an emergency then they can let me know. I've had that happen to me. I was at the gym and my GF called me on my daughters phone to let me know that my daughter dislocated her shoulder and was going to the ER by ambulance because of the severity of the injury. (my GF is a nurse) LOL my daughter told her to use her phone to call so that I'd answer. Good thing she did!

I set a land record getting to the hospital that day!!! And yes the I still feel guilty about not going to that ONE stinking game.

I've used the phone once and it was to text my ex-wife she was bringing me my children and needed the address of the gym.
I felt guilty even doing that as I was in the cinema room and the light was bright. I tried to dim my phone all the way and keep my answers as short as possible. I don't want to be anyone's distraction including my own.

I've had other's typically very large people who were going .5 mph and were talking extremely loud on the phone (again I do cardio in the cinema). I didn't say anything for about 10 minutes but I had finally had enough. Said something to the young lady and she just brushed me off, then I stopped had to walk all the way to the desk and informed them. She was asked to hang it up or leave immediately. She left still talking on the phone about how rude everyone was being to her.

Haven't seen her since and wouldn't really care if I did.

As long as you're not loud and it doesn't cause you to hog a machine / station, then I don't care.

What other people do at the gym has no bearing on my workout...so really, I don't care. I barely notice the existence of other people in the gym unless they're doing something really awesome.

It doesn't bother me unless they're taking up room on a machine and just chit-chatting. But I'm always amazed.

A few weeks ago there was a woman in the shower in my gym - chatting away on her phone. In the shower?!

my gym has a no cell phone rule. if you are talking or the text alerts are going off constantly etc and some one complains you will be asked to finish your conversation in the lobby.

I dont worry about things that have absolutely no impact on my life what so ever. You should give it a try, its quite liberating.

Try headphones and focus on yourself instead of others.

My gym has a no pictures, sounds, or talking on your cell in the gym policy. There are signs up, doesn't mean you don't occasionally have people talking on the phone, sitting or standing in front of a sign that's telling them to go outside to do so.

I'm not 'worried'. And I do have headphones on..very loudly as a matter of fact.
Liberating is walking around outside naked. ;)

Me neither. I just don't understand why people care about this.

Sure, if they are sitting on a machine and not working out while talking on the phone - this would be a problem.

But the problem is not the phone or the conversation - it's that they are sitting on a machine that they are not using.

I used to belong to a gym that had all sorts of rules and signs about this - and it made me concerned enough about breaking the rules (I tend to follow rules that I've signed and agreed to excessively) that I didn't use my phone for anything (apps, movies etc) - and that ultimately pushed me to go to a different gym without so many rules and without such a focus on this.

Now I workout at home and I'm happier all around.

I thought that you were supposed to be able to talk but not able to sing and that was your proper training pace for normal cardio?

Yeah it's rude. But it wouldn't bother me so much if I couldn't hear every detail of their conversation half way across the gym, even when I have headphones on. I really don't want to hear about your hernia surgery in detail. STFU.

So glad I work in a Wellness Center that's connected to a hospital. No phone conversation on gym floor is strongly enforced and members respect it. They can talk downstairs in the lobby, or out on the outside landing.

What I find sad is that so many people find it hard just to stow the phone away for just an hour. I can understand someone that HAS to have it on them if they are on call, an emergency tech, etc., but with the exception for listening to music or maybe checking an app for a workout, so many I see just can't get off of them. And it's now carried over to when families go out and eat dinner. Instead of talking to each other, they're watching videos or texting. Sad IMO.
