Just starting out with MFP. Why is it when you log water it take away from your total. I thought it was good to drink water and log it but it lessens my calories. Please help me to understand.

How are you logging water? Are you choosing it from the food database or just using the water entry at the bottom of the food diary. It doesn't deduct any calories from mine when choosing the water entry at the bottom of the food diary. If you're choosing from the database, don't - the entry you may have chosen could be for flavoured water (unless that's what you are actually drinking in which case you do need it to deduct the calories).

Thank you for replying. The one I am choosing is from the one at the bottom that says water. It allows you to put in the ounces of water you drink.

What do you mean take away from your total? Water doesn't have calories.

That shouldn't be making any difference to your calorie count. Do you have a device synced for steps with a negative adjustment, that's the only thing beside food/drink logging in your diary that would reduce your calorie allowance.
