Newly Diagnosed with Hypothyroidism

Hello, all! I was recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism after a radioactive ablation for my Grave's disease earlier this year. To say I am beyond elated about no longer having Grave's is an understatement. I am starting Synthroid tomorrow.

My daily exercise habits are 3 walks a day, 30 minutes each. I eat 1,200 to 1,400 calories a day.

I am looking for others in the same boat as me who are looking to lose weight. I am a 23 year old female, currently weigh 218 and stand at 4'11". My goal weight is 130lbs, maintain for a while, then ultimately get to 115lbs.

I am looking for people to add who share the same struggles as me.

Congratulations on getting through your treatment for Graves.

I've been hypothyroid all of my life, but was not actually diagnosed until I was 30, while I was being investigated for a different condition. I spent my entire teens fighting with my weight, brittle nails, feeling cold, mildly depressed etc with no idea what was going on. Unless you have a known condition (like Graves or Hashimoto's) or a family history (I did, but had no clue that I did until, after I was diagnosed my mother mentioned that my Grand Mother was also hypothyroid...argggh!!!) Doctors never considered checking TSH levels in women under 50.

Getting treated for this did help my depression, cold sensitivity, my nails (a bit), but the weight didn't fall off magically. For me at least, the pounds don't leave easily. It can be done but it requires consistency - something that has been a problem for me historically since I have not been as vigilant about getting myself back on track right away when life happens. The key is to not lose hope, not to give up, and not to beat yourself up when you have setbacks. Keeping a sense of humour helps.

I had lost almost 40 lbs in the first 5 months of 2018, but then Life Happened* and 23 of those lbs along with it.
I was grateful that it wasn't all of them, and have gotten myself back on track a bit over 2 weeks ago now that life has stabilized.

Like you, I'm keeping in a 1200 - 1400 ish range; a bit more on Friday - because it's Sushi Day and I'm always going to find a way to make it work!

I take a Barre class on Thursdays and do Pilates on Saturday morning. Because I work remotely, I take a few 5-8 minute 'Dance breaks' in between meetings or work blocks to get myself away from my desk. It may not seem like much, but it adds up, helps clear the brain, and it's hard to be in a bad mood after 5 minutes of cranking your favourite tunes and dancing like no one is watching. Once the weather improves out here, I'll be doing some cycling and more walking. It's been a long winter here, and the urge to nail the door shut and bury oneself in a big pile of blankets and hibernate is strong.

I'm also looking to make it down to 130 (I'm 5' 4"). When I finally faced the scale I clocked in a 234, but have lost 6 lbs since re-starting.

You're welcome to add me if you'd like - but I should warn you that I'm ancient.

Best of luck on your journey.

I have no thyroid and still find that with MFP and exercise, weight comes off!
