I'm a type 1 diabetic and do things a bit differently. I do not eat carbs normally anyway, so I'm fat adapted (i.e. the mitochondria in my muscles has changed so that skeletal muscles can directly oxidize fat at a higher running intensity). But I still end up running beyond that capacity sometimes, especially during races. So I cut back on basal long enough before so that I have little or no IOB during the run, plus carry dextrose tablets in case of a low.

There was a short race last year (20K) where I failed to stop basal until about 20-30 min. before starting... so I had typical IOB during most of the first 5 miles. BG dropped and I was in the 30's mg/dl by mile 5. Took a few dextrose tablets and was 40's for miles 6-8. Eventually it came back up, but never exceeded 70 until after the race was over. It was pretty bad, but that experience reminds me to be sure to stop basal closer to 2 hrs. ahead (my insulin acting time is about 2.5 hrs.) of races and not restart unless I'm going way too high or I'm about done.

BTW, there is a product that many use - both diabetics and not - for slow release carbs. It's called UCAN SuperStarch. For your strategy, it may be worthwhile to try that.
