My thought is that one should avoid weight loss surgery unless your life is in danger if you don't lose weight fast. Weight loss surgeries don't teach you how to eat properly, they don't teach you any sort of discipline, or anything that you will need for lifelong success.1

AJ_G Why do you think that "Weight loss surgeries don't teach you how to eat properly, they don't teach you any sort of discipline, or anything that you will need for lifelong success." What are you basing that belief on? Do you actually know or understand anything about the process involved. WLS surgery patients work with dieticians and many other specialists for months (often 6months or longer) before they can even be considered to be approved to have this surgery. There is a rigorous program of a very strict diet that must be followed to the letter, forever. Not doing so can have serious consequences. There is also an insistence upon exercise. This is not some quick fix magic bullet and suddenly the weight is gone. Things just don't happen that way. In the nine months leading up to my surgery I lost just over 60 pounds by following my dieticians rules and changing many of the foods I was eating to healthier options. That is the most weight I have ever lost and kept off in my life! Before my BPD w/DS just under a month ago, I had diabetes, high blood pressure and so much pain in my knees and back from arthritis I could barely walk or stand. I was looking at life in a wheelchair and possibly being dead in a few short years. I am no longer diabetic, and no longer need high blood pressure medications. I also have been free of pain in my knees and back since my surgery. I am so thankful to have met the wonderful, highly skilled surgeon who has given me my life back by giving me this tool. I still have at least 100 pounds to lose and I know with the guidance of the dieticians and this tool I will continue to learn the discipline I previously lacked that will help me succeed at leading a healthier, happier, longer life.0
