I am 78 and need to get weight off for my health. Only gained weight when I divorced at age 65 - was alone for 8 years until I turned 65 to get medicare, then finished divorce. Its hard when you are alone in the evening and your thoughts go to what is in the cupboard or refrigerator well first steps taken - got rid of ALL food I can not eat. Only health stuff left.. Now onward ……………..

First of all, good for you for taking care of your health!
I find it helps to not leave a void in behavior behind. If you're used to snacking at night, it's hard to just not do that anymore, because you're used to doing something during that time. It helps if you can add something else in in its place. If I tell you 'Don't think about pink elephants right now', you're going to think about pink elephants, right? But if I tell you 'Think about purple elephants right now', you'll do that just as easily.
So find something to take up that time, like doing crafts, or have a lovely bath with candles and music, or whatever suits you.

74 here and also divorced. I have struggled with evening eating as well. What has worked for me is to make sure I get some good exercise during the day, eat (don't skip meals), and make sure I get up and move every hour during the evening (I set my Fitbit to remind me).
Your idea of getting rid of everything you shouldn't be eating is excellent. Even though I am at goal and in maintenance (down 50 pounds in 6 mo), I still do not buy the things I should not be eating. I try to save those things as special treats when I am eating out.0
