My weight seems to fluctuate pretty wildly...

I lost four stone with MFP a few years ago, down to 9 stone 9lbs. I was happy there, but unfortunately had major spinal surgery two years ago and after 11 months in hospital, I'm now 13.6 stone.

I started a gym routine 8 weeks ago, with a PT. I'm doing 30 minutes or so of weight training, as most of my muscle has wasted, and 10 - 15 mins of hard cardio at the end of a session. I go two or three times a week. I also try to go for a daily walk, and my steps tend to be around 4,000 naturally. As of last week, I'm adding a swim or two a week.

My weight went down nicely last week, I started the week at 86.05 and went down pretty much every day. There was a slight increase on Monday as we ate out for Mothers Day late on Sunday, and I reached my lowest weight of 84kg on Wednesday... but now it keeps going up. I'm 84.6kg today. That feels like a huge swing!

I'm always below my calories. I'm having to reduce carbs slowly because I'm already shattered all the time, and I had a bad day for carbs yesterday, but I was still 300+ calories in deficit from my MPF allowance...

Will this settle down? I'm hoping to have a final surgery in 6 weeks and recovery will be so much better if I'm a bit lighter.

I'm so embarrassed to be posting this :'( I weigh EVERYTHING and have been as committed as I possibly could be.

Weight fluctuates up and down for everyone, its normal. Even in maintenance I can swing up and down by 2-3lbs from day to day.

Don't over think it, use a daily weight app as that gives you the average trend. If you're being accurate about your calories in and consistent, calorie deficit leads to weight loss.

0.6kg isn't really that big of a swing. My own weight fluctuates as much as 5lbs (Just over 2kgs) up or down from day to day and has always done so.

Water weight, food/waste in your system, etc can impact the weight on the scale.

I don't think your bodies normal water fluctuation response will have that much of an impact on your recovery.

Don't be embarrassed, your body is doing what it's meant to do.

Worth noting you will probably retain water after surgery too as that's a normal reaction while your body is recovering.

i fluctuate 2-3lbs within a day as well as over a few dyas. 0.6kg is about 1.3lbs so hardly a wild fluctuation.

That’s not a big fluctuation at all. I can fluctuate between 0-5 pounds, depending on the day and what I did and ate.

This is normal weight fluctuation for most people. It is not a large swing. Additionally, since you are adding new exercise, you shouldn’t be surprised if you see temporary water weight gain for a while. This is normal when beginning or increasing one’s activity.

After going camping last weekend, I was up 4+ pounds. But I knew exactly why. Sore muscles from hiking, a slight sunburn, and more carbs than usual. The 4 pounds is gone, plus more, today.

As others have mentioned these are fairly normal levels of fluctuation.

You have had a rough go of it and I hope this upcoming surgery goes well and you recover quickly.
