Keto, fun, but unsustainable

Tried it for about a month, but found it to be unsustainable in the end. Back to the carbs for me!

Now you know. No harm in trying something as long as you know when to recognize it doesn't fit you.
Perhaps you can try to work the "fun" parts into a plan that does work for you.13 -
I don't even think it's fun...19

Best not to get obsessive with imaginary, cult-ish inspired rules....
Agreed with @NovusDies there is definitely something to be learned from experimentation & learning how to individualize aspects of one diet to fit your personal goal(s)
I certainly prefer eating more carbs and protein - so much that I am far from being a textbook keto person. My macros are more reminiscent of a bastardized keto (high protein focused, restricted carbohydrates, fat is variable for me based on overall kcals that I need); I will certainly have some high fat more traditional keto macro cheat days though every so often7 -

Mmm...tacos!6

Never sounded like much fun to me and I never wanted to try it - but whatever works for people is fine.
Way not for me though.3 -
Yeah, I wanted to give it at least 4 weeks. I really missed the carbs. Sweet potatoes, bananas, berries, tacos, and on and on. Hats off to anyone who can sustain keto!
Why hats off to anyone who can sustain it though?? - I mean if it works for people, fine - but it doesnt have any moral or other superior qualities that we should all be admiring of those who do it.
I cynically suspect many of those on the bandwagon will not sustain it either - bit like paleo which had many adherents back in the day but you never hear of now.

Keto is just a WOE, not a test of personal moral fiber.17

I wouldn't try a cult diet.5

My experiment with it was a total fail too but that is an individual response. I am not sure how many people would sign up for my plan either though.
I think it is generally a smart idea to customize a plan for yourself and if there is something that the OP enjoyed from the experiment it should be incorporated.

One mans cult is another mans custom diet plan.17

It's not for everyone, but I do truly enjoy it and this coming from someone who loves sweets. I love they way I feel, I love the way my skin looks (I have rosacea), I love the energy and love having zero brain fog. Having a low back fusion, sciatica and arthritis in my lower back and hips I find that when I follow a ketogenic lifestyle I have more control over pain and soreness.9

It's good that it helped you learn what works for you and what doesn't, and that you moved to a different strategy instead of suffering on one you knew you couldn't stick to. I think keto is a good strategy for those inclined towards keto foods, but for us, it just doesn't work.2

Yeah wasn't sustainable for me either. And then when I went off it years ago I had a carb eating rebound which resulted in the gain of a lot of weight (due to calories duh). Yikes!1

I am embarking on the journey for the third time. I didn't do it right the first time, used low-carb cookbooks with weird ingredients the second time, and here I am a third time, with recipes on Pinterest. I just hope they work out, to let me lose weight. Many of the days on this Ketogenic Diet, do not have butter. Many of the items suggest you slather it in butter... For example coffee. Suggests 1 tablespoon of real butter. My mom thinks is the grossest thing to do to coffee. We'll see.0

There are SO many recipes that get you close to what you like. If you're not into experimenting (or lazy), keto is not for you. It's more of a lifestyle than a diet. What are you looking to do? Lose weight? If so, then low carbs, no sugar (all the things you mentioned are turned into sugar by our bodies) is the way to go.
I'm having fun with it. Turns out I like cooking up things that people can't believe are keto/low carb. Two months in and I'm halfway to my 3-inch waist reduction goal.19 -
Fun is not the word I would use, personally. Nothing fun about not being able to eat things I like, and I can eat keto foods just fine if something sounds fun without having to go keto.4

When I was in Costa Rico for 6 weeks I dropped a size without even trying while eating tropical fruit all day long plus rice and beans, so, tons of carbs and lots of sugar.9 -

Are you saying the weight I lost is an illusion?
ETA for context: I eat 200+g of carbs daily6 -

I agree that some people seem to take it way too far and obsess way too much over ketosis and macros. I do the best I can, and I don't consider it "dirty" or "lazy" keto. I just refuse to spend money on test strips or MCT oil ($$$) or any of the other potions and powders. I just keep it very simple and it works for me.3 -

Seriously. I am a lover of cheese. I could eat cheese all damn day and nothing else. If only it wasn't so calorie-dense.6 -

Who says it's a "cult" diet? Pretty dismissive of a way of eating that many people find satisfying and sustainable, especially type 2 diabetics like me.2 -

I'm enjoying it a lot. I'm not a great cook to begin with but I love being able to have almost anything I want and still keep it keto. This morning I had mug cake banana bread with grass fed butter, and I've also made a peanut butter mug cake with whipped cream. Not only were they delicious and satisfying, but they had zero impact on my blood sugar or the scale. Looking forward to trying more new things, like fathead pizza and biscuits and gravy.0 -

If this approach hasn't worked for you twice before, why are you trying it again? Why do you feel keto is a good fit for you if it hasn't offered you sustainable results in the past?4 -

You don't have to cut carbs to lose weight. Study after study shows there is no advantage to a keto or low carb diet vs any other diet when calories are constant.6 -
To me, that's like asking "can't you eat pizza by eating a tomato sauce slurry?", it's just not the same thing.6 -
