Hi I recently started doing this thing called Infrared sauna website claims you burn about 400 calories, wondering if anyone else has experience with it or info about calories burnt. You pretty much sit in a super hot container for about 45 minutes and just sweat a lot 😂 I use it mainly for detox of body and boosts my energy. But wondering about the Calories also

I imagine something like that wouldn't burn close to 400cal. It's certainly not detoxing anything; you have organs that do that.22

That seems very highly unlikely. Sitting in a sauna burns slightly more calories than just sitting in a chair at a desk, but nowhere close to that amount. I'd be surprised if you burned more than 50 calories doing that. There are no real weight loss benefits to using a sauna.
I am sure you lose quite a lot of water weight, but you will put it right back on once you rehydrate. There is no such thing as "detoxifying" in a sauna. You don't sweat out toxins. Your kidney and liver naturally detoxify your body. There is no need to try to detoxify other ways.

The website is a lying liar that lies.47

Nope, doesn't work like that. You don't burn more calories sitting in a warm bus stop in summer waiting for the bus compared to a cold bus stop in winter. You only lose fluids, and potentially some electrolytes from sweating.7

Oh, baby. I live in Atlanta. It’s like a sauna here eight months out of twelve. Using this logic, I wouldn’t have been as fat as a little ole butterball. Ever.27

I would assume very close to what you would burn sitting on the couch... instead of 1.5ish cals/min, maybe 1.6ish??
you may lose a lb or so, but that will be all water6 -
if it were that easy wouldn't everyone just sit in a sauna and be tiny? wouldn't people living in the south all be skinny?12

Breaking in after a couple polite replies, made me lol.0 -
The gungy "toxins" that you shower off is dead skin that the heat and moisture has loosened.0

Is it like this one?

Only if it inadvertently sets you on fire.
Actually, being set on fire would probably result in a pretty decent detox as well. Probably won’t do much for your energy, though.4 -
Seems like it would be cold that would slightly increase your sitting calories not heat.
I don't know what "super hot" means but 45 minutes is a long time and I would be at least a little concerned about hyperthermia.7 -

But.. but... it increases heart rate! Of course it burns more calories!
*goes off to buy herself new palpitations. Huge burns in an instant*
(yes, I avoided going post watershed here)

I have used the infrared saunas not for weight loss though, I am pretty sure the calorie count is farfetched.
Use it if you like it, but don't rely on it for calorie use or weight loss.3 -

To be fair, there might also be environmental "toxins" on your skin from poor air quality, cigarette smoke, etc. A good hot shower and loofah will take care of those.0 -

Yes, I used to sauna (then shower) after swimming at the pool in the gym to try to get the pool chemicals off of me.0 -
SassypantsMeow wrote: »To everyone writing that infrared saunas do not burn calories, you are wrong. There are studies that show it does in fact increase your metabolic rate. Granted, you won’t lose five pounds after each use, but it does increase your heart rate. Just wear your Apple Watch in one of these saunas for proof of your own. There aren’t a lot of published medical studies on the topic but here is one. Just because you don’t think it’s possible does not mean it isn’t.
If this were the magic bullet for weight loss there would have been no need to bump a zombie thread from April. As this information would posted on a regular basis.
