So I ended up walking a good portion of it, and thankfully I wore my older running shoes, as it has been raining a lot here. Still, I ended up enjoying it! So different than road running. Kinda tossing about the idea of starting to more of that. So, what basic, beginning tips are there for out of shape, non-elite beginning trail runners?
And my May goal? Run. Nothing more specific, just run.
My number 1 tip: Embrace the mud. Trail running is fun and in many ways it’s less competitive than road running - no two trails are alike. Times are invariably slower and it is perfectly ok to walk the hills (the steep ones especially). Trail shoes make a significant difference in the wet. Enjoy!
Yep. Listen to @ContraryMaryMary she be saying much wisdom!
@dreamer12151 Welcome to the Wacky World of Trail Running
Yes Embrace the Mud, Through it NO TIP TOEING around it.
Eventually if you get really hooked you will have to look at some Trail Shoes with their deeper lugs for grabbing onto the dirt/rock/mud and hanging on to prevent slip and fall injuries. We have a local trail where the one Hill is Called " Parachute " because if you are in Road shoes you will wish you had a Parachute with you.
I have 5 Favorite - Must Do Trail Run Events in my Yearly schedule.
You can tell who the Trail Innocents are - you come up to a Mud Hole or water crossing and they are trying very hard to stay dry and sparkling clean while the experienced Trail Hounds just charge straight through like a kid finding a mud puddle to splash in. A few fun photo's of trail running.@ContraryMaryMary The 3 pigs 2 day sounds like a nice challenge event. There are getting to be more of that style event around, some incorporate a Zulu Obstacle Course type event for the first short course portion of it.
This was the powerlines route last week some friends were out on.
It was a lot of laughing. And yes those are shoe marks sliding down the hill 😂 at least they had fun.
Note the big water puddle waiting for them at the bottom of the hill.
This water crossing was a little on the chilly sidepolskagirl01 wrote: »I traveled Friday & Saturday and am now jet-lagged and there are rolling hills no matter which way I go. But it's good to be in the same place as my husband again (he was away for work for the past 3 months). We're in the States for the summer. I decided against the 50k race in June but got signed up for a local 10k on the same day by my sister, so should be fun
I think I'd like to maintain at a slightly higher than HM level going forward, but for now I'm just going to take it slow getting back into it and give my body the rest/recovery it seems to need right now.
@polskagirl01 So roughly where in the States??
In case one of our many mutual MFP Running Friends is close by for a meet and greet at an event?
Like you I like to keep myself close to HM Ready ( recreational not race level ) as it is easier to maintain conditioning at that level than it is to do a build back up to it.
HaHAHAHA! EMBRACE THE MUD SUCK! (Now we need a trail runners shirt🧟♂️ <—— it’s a muddy zombie. Just go with it)

@juliet3455 someday I want to join you for a trail run/race. You make it sound so fun and you are so supportive. I'd rather not do the icy cold water one though.
@polskagirl01 glad you are enjoying some nice recovery and your husband is back. Hope you have a good trip to the states for the summer.

I ran a warm-up outside again before strength training. The weather was decently cool and looked like it might rain at any time but held off. Strength group was all about pulling today with no leg work at all to save them for tomorrow night's race.
This will be my 4th year running the JP Morgan Corporate Challenge. I always have mixed feelings about this one, at 3.5 miles it's the time pressure of a 5k but with a little extra just to make you work a little harder. But the bigger race atmosphere is pretty fun when it's nice weather with all the companies having their own tents for their teams. My employer seems to get a little cheaper with their food every year, and some of the companies have fabulous spreads. So it's a bit envy-inducing when you see someone else's tent with their delicious restaurant-catered BBQ compared to our chips and little wraps or sandwiches. Especially when our team has won overall several times (we have some ringers, not including me ) - you'd think they'd shell out. We'll see, maybe they will this year!

Was a sloth over the snowy weekend. Pt lady took the rock to me again, and then ktaped it. I’m on a personal record of 3 days without the tape falling off. Today I hit a recent weight pr, and an all time rep pr at that weight on bench press. Then treadmilled it, as I don’t own winter scuba gear or whatever you need for the combination of weather conditions we are having this week. I shouldn’t complain, the moisture makes my job easier. And I’m not dodging hard white things or big spinny things like little sis keeps having to do at her current client site in Oklahoma.
Anyways, back on topic.... 3.1 miles today = 39/505 -

More is a comin’ too. Business’s closed today or were put on skeleton staff anticipating a horrific storm. Alls been calm and I think someone got a bit over excited. I don’t mind having electricity and no howling wind and rain.5 -

After being sick all weekend, I ran my long run tonight after work. Most of it, anyway. I might shift runs a bit this week to adjust.6 -
Since I told myself I wanted to try the at least do my short runs outside this summer, I made myself go outside this evening. It was so hot, humid, and just generally blegh. It was a hard run. I'm definitely going to have to move my long runs indoors this week. Otherwise I'm concerned I'll get overheated.

Plugged my watch in to charge last night only to find it completely flat this morning - faulty connection I think. Upshot was, I had to wear my old watch which only records time. Ran the same route as last Thursday so I knew I'd get 12km but had no idea of pace until I got home. It was quite liberating to simply run on how I felt without the pressure to speed up or slow down. In the end I was two minutes slower today than last week. This I blame on doing both a Pilates and a yoga class yesterday and the resulting sore tush!

5k run this morning. I'm feeling so much better atm!
Then work was so slow. 3 patients all day. And no projects. So im watching arnold schwarzenegger movies thanks to a podcast I've been listening to. Just finished last action hero, now watching Conan the Barbarian. Not sure this is an improvement. 3.5 weeks to go8 -
Hoping everyone and their families who might be in the path of the epic storms today/tonight/tomorrow are safe!!

Short and slow out and back this morning (slightly less slow on the way back, the sun was in my eyes and just wanted to get it over with). Business trip starting tomorrow.
The weather you're all getting in North America looks kinda scary. Stay safe people.
Upcoming races:

Love this idea. I can’t remember what the final frame if this cartoon is, but you could possible edit it to say, ‘that was an awesome trail run!’ Or something to that effect.7 -
Apparently today I needed a good run. My body and conscious brain did not know this, but my subconscious apparently did. I went out for what was supposed to be a standard 5 kilometres before work. Zoned out so completely I missed my turnaround point, by the time I realised that I'd gone 5km already. Impromptu weekday long run it is then! Good job I was going real slow anyway. I hadn't run more than 8km since the HM I ran back in December, so am expecting to feel it later.
It actually works out well though. Not only do I feel awesome now, it gives me more days to recover before I do another long run (scheduled for Thursday next week as I'm running a little charity race on the Sunday) and also means I have space for two more 10km training runs before my 10km race on June 15th. Now I just have to work on shaving 3 minutes off my time so I don't miss the cut-off at said race :-/
May goal: 55km Run so far: 48.9km10 -
@MegaMooseEsq great job on your 5K!
@kgirlhart sorry your HM got cancelled, but really nice that you went ahead and ran a HM on your own. That totally justifies you taking home the finisher medal (dog tags...which is a very cool idea BTW).
@Avidkeo glad you got an agent for your house. Hope the all the stress goes away and you sell quickly!
@Elise4270 hope you are safe from the tornadoes! Weather map looked rather ominous last night/this morning
5 miles this morning. Successfully got the run in ahead of the storms. That being said, it was really hot, humid, and windy. Went out to do 1 mile WU & CD, 8x 1:00 5K pace intervals. Lost count and only did 7, but they were all too fast (hit 4:58/mi at one point). Need to stay within current 5K pace so as not to injure myself (but really don't know what that pace is right now). Probably need to hover around 6:45-7:00/mi.

Average at least 135k per month, which would put me over 1,000 miles for the year.
Run the Year Team: Five for Nineteen
Nearly 40 degrees F cooler today than Sunday. Tweaked my back a little playing golf yesterday, but it was in a different place from my recent injury and might just have been the vertebra going back into the position they're supposed to be in. Warmed up and loosened up quickly.

4-13 Shine the Light 5K - 31:12 chip time; First Place male 65 and older
6-1 Freedom 5K (Will be off the schedule due to another commitment)

5/21 - 3.04
I forgot to log my plank last night; also did a little bit of strength training. Not much but every little bit counts. I took the dogs out for another run this morning. It was a little tougher, having run only 12 hours earlier, but I kept it relatively slow. My speed was still a little faster than it should be, reaching a higher max HR than intended. Now I'm starving!!6 -
haven't been able to run. i've gotten an injury around the hip joint. something got pinched. i've only got a 5k on the 8th so i've got time to recover. resting it is hard considering my second job is teaching aerial yoga. kinda bummed. but i'll get a new foster dog this weekend. i'm sure it will keep me busy and distracted13

@Elise4270 hope you are safe from the tornadoes! Weather map looked rather ominous last night/this morning
Thanks @Scott6255 ! I'm still here... Think it was just more rain. I slept through it.5 -

Basically now that I'm here and have the work travel schedule from my husband, and a kids' activity schedule from the grandparents, I need to sit down and see if any races will fit in-between the two. Will keep you all (or "yinz" in the local language) posted!
For now all I've got on the calendar is this:
June 8: Daily American 5k/10k Challenge, Somerset, PA

@polskagirl01 - I am a Pittsburgh native and went to school at Penn State. I grew up skiing at 7 Springs and visiting Idlewild Park as a kid. lots of great memories in that area. Such a pretty part of the state. Hopefully you will get some good trail running in while you are there!3
