Hi, I'm nearly 68 (how the hell did that happen?) and have put on a lot of weight this winter due to a series of unfortunate events- I'm 5'6" ish ( formerly 5'7" I'm shrinking!) and am now at 164. Am having a heck of a time losing weight this time around. Eating 1200 calories/day and walking about 5 miles a day and it's hardly budging. Appreciate any advice, commiseration, jokes, etc. Hope you're all having a great day.

The frustrating thing is that, as much as you feel you've put on a "lot" of weight, you aren't that far off from your healthy weight range. At 5'6" that's 118-154lbs and when you're 10lbs or so from the top of the range, weight drops off S-L-O-W-L-Y because you haven't got a large margin for error with tracking and you don't have that much excess fat to lose.

So, first, how are you tracking your food intake? Are you weighing (most accurate), measuring (somewhat accurate), or eyeballing (least accurate)?

Second, with 10lbs or so to lose, you may be running too aggressive a calorie deficit. You should be trying for about 1/2lb per week and eating back at least 50% of exercise calories burned. Eating too little doesn't slow your weight loss in and of itself. But it CAN mess with your hunger signals (more cravings/hungrier) and energy levels (so you might not be getting the workout you think you are. You may be fidgeting less, resting more, etc., when not exercising). For some perspective, I'm 5'3" and on 1350 before exercise to lose 1/2lb per week. Eating back a portion of my exercise, it's more like 1600-1700. 1200 sounds pretty low to me.
