Weight loss is done through a calorie deficit. Getting your steps in is good, but not necessary.

you don’t need to exercise to lose weight. just need to eat in a calorie deficit. weight loss happens mostly in the kitchen

exercise IS good for fitness and health (physical and mental) so if 10,000 is doable go for it!

If you are trying to lose weight thru exercise alone, this is going to be a tough road.

Let's say you burn an additional 350 calories thru exercise each day. If you don't eat more than usual (difficult to say unless you are actively tracking your intake) then in 10 days you will have lost 1 pound.

The problem is as you become smaller your calorie burns diminish. It will take longer to lose that 1 pound.

Because you essentially have to track your intake anyway, and because weight loss is just the first step (think maintenance).....it's far better to track portions and learn good habits than it is to exercise just for weight loss.

Exercise is something we should do to stay healthy. Hopefully, it becomes a good habit for maintenance.

You’ll get more efficient results working both sides of the equation - calorie reduction and calories burned from exercise and getting your steps and increased lifestyle activities.

Unless you have health issues preventing the latter, you will be shortchanging yourself taking a calorie reduction approach only.

My two cents based on my own results.

    Wishing you the best.

The only steps that will help you lose weight are those that are IN ADDITION TO what you were already walking. If you were already getting 5,000 steps a day, then you would be adding 5,000 steps. This is a little over 2 miles a day, which would burn 120-150 calories per day. If all your food calories remain the same as before, this will help you lose a little over 1 lb a month. Calorie burn for walking is bodyweight x .33 x miles per a commonly accepted formula, or at your current weight about 60 cals per mile.
